It’s all in the (joint) family – oh yes it is, and it’s all happening right here, right now in Jama Taqseem. The relatable moments are many but we’ll just give you some that seemed to jump off the screen and right into our living rooms, sparking online conversations because well, it’s good to vent, helps calm the nerves for some, and lighten the heart for others!

Jama Taqseem has thrown Laila (and audiences) right into the middle of joint family life, with all the mess that comes along with it. Here’s what made audiences shout out, “That’s me, I’ve been there too!” Read on to know if you’re the one who relates or, possibly caused the situation in the first place? No judgement her. We’re just calling it as it is.

1. The Curious Case of the Automatic Washing Machine

It’s not about the washing machine, it’s the automatic before the word that triggers a delete prompt in mothers-in-law minds as they perceive a soaring electricity bill, and less muscle power from the bahu? I mean, if I’ve done it, and my mother and her mother did it, (they even washed clothes by hand, 100%) then why get a new contraption? Too much electricity consumption, and too less work? Something’s already off in my dictionary (It’s them, not us). Remove the auto and keep the machine, they say. No matter how you slice it, it’s not welcome in our house and that’s the end of that!

2. Visiting Your Mother’s House

Ahem. Read the room, the entire room… You can’t just get up and go. You need to ask for permission, follow protocol and inform the higher command. Lest you fail to do so, you will be met with disapproving glances, a rant or two and, a husband who will flip – as in, he’ll do a ‘before and after’ on you, just like Qais did on Laila, the moment you step back into the house. Does that last bit need explaining, don’t worry we’re on it in the next point.

3. Now You See Him, Now You See This Other Person?

He’s all supportive, chill and calm about dropping you to your mom’s place on the way to work, laundry and all. He might even be okay with you bringing back some food. I mean, less to cook and more time to spend with each other right? Newly married couple = love birds who can’t have enough of each other right?

Wrong.

He’s all supportive dropping you to your mother’s in the morning. But then come evening and you head home. The scene has changed, drastically and no one told you. You are greeted by a husband who tells you to inform his mom before you leave for your mom’s next time, do not take your dirty laundry there, do not bring back food, and in general, learn how to get along with all the people, (there are quite a few), who live in the house. And all this, uttered in a no-nonsense tone, expecting zero conversation and 100 % compliance from your side, makes you wonder – is this the same man who was holding my hand on the way to the office in the morning?

It’s called waking up, smelling the coffee, honeymoon period over, back to life, back to reality, his mother giving him an earful on joint family and bahu protocols and him not wanting to take the pain of more family politics just pushing off the trauma on you.

Here, you’re the woman, you deal with, what if they’re my family? Surprise, surprise, now they’re yours too!

Surprise surprise, yeah, honeymoon over.

4. One Rule for Daughters, Another for Daughters-in-law

When Laila notes that Nudrat apa herself is not living in a joint family setup but has all the advice and toxic one at that, for how she should live in one, Qais responds promptly how his poor sister’s in-laws were very toxic and no, it’s better she lives alone. Aha, says Laila’s expression, one rule for the bahu and another for the beti – but full marks to her for holding it all in. Spiler alert: It’s bound to come out though, sooner or later, sooner rather than later. Take our word for it. The way this story is propelling itself into chaos, it’s any time now.

5. Laila’s Mom Be Like, ‘Meri Naive Beti’

Laila’s mom (like all moms of newly-married girls), thinks Laila needs protecting from her in-laws and she’s making sure she speaks her mind. From telling her she wasn’t meant to cook food or do housework to how ‘kamzor’ she’s become, her eyerolls speak louder than words and one feels Laila trying hard to escape her piercing gaze. But her disapproving thoughts that don’t miss a thing and if spoken, could stir up quite the storm!

And that’s it folks, our 5 most relatable Jama Taqseem Joint Family moments. If we missed some more, go ahead and add them in comments. Which one was your most relatable moment?
