The week in rewind – here’s everything you missed (or couldn’t stop talking about)

1. If You’re Not Watching Pakistan Idol Yet, Here’s What You’re Missing – And We Think You’ll Change Your Mind

There’s a certain kind of magic when new voices breathe life into timeless classics — and that’s exactly what the Theater Round of Pakistan Idol gave us. Each performance this week was a heartfelt tribute to the golden era of melody, with contestants taking on songs that once defined Pakistani music. From Noor Jehan’s grace to Mehdi Hassan’s depth, the stage felt like a nostalgic rewind — but through a new generation’s eyes and voices.
What stood out wasn’t just vocal talent — it was emotion, expression, and that shared reverence for music that transcends decades. These weren’t just performances; they were conversations with the past, carried forward by young artists who clearly understand its soul.

2. Goonj Comes To Life: FUUAST VC Case Shows The Reality Of Workplace Harassment

In October 2025, the Federal Ombudsman for Protection Against Harassment (FOSPAH) in Pakistan made an important decision about workplace harassment, a problem also shown in the drama serial Goonj. At the centre of the ruling was Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science & Technology (FUUAST), where its Vice‑Chancellor, Dr Zabta Khan Shinwari, was found guilty of repeatedly making sexist, gender‑stereotypical and demeaning remarks about women faculty members. Simultaneously and ironically, the drama serial Goonj – with its female protagonist Zarnab – has been unpacking very similar issues of subtle workplace harassment in a way that resonates with what happened at FUUAST. Together, the real‑life ruling and the fiction point to the same urgent message: harassment is not always about physical assault, but often about culture, power, language and institutional responsibility.
At FUUAST, the complaint was brought by a female lecturer who alleged that the Vice‑Chancellor had told her – and similarly addressed other female faculty – that “when females reach the age of around 35 or above, they experience hormonal issues, and their mental condition becomes unstable, causing them to create problems for others.” The ombudsperson found these remarks to be “inherently sexist, derogatory and demeaning,” and ruled that they constituted gender‑stereotyping and behaviour capable of creating a hostile work environment under the law. The professional hierarchy – someone in authority making sweeping comments about women’s competence and psychological stability – heightened the seriousness of the conduct. The penalty: a censure under Section 4(4)(i)(a) of the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act, 2010, with an order that the university syndicate monitor his conduct and that institutional reforms be undertaken (such as establishing a Standing Inquiry Committee, displaying the statutory Code of Conduct and running regular awareness workshops).

3. Ceasefire In Ruins: Israel’s Deadly Attacks In Gaza – What We Know So Far

The fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel has collapsed following a wave of Israeli air and ground strikes that killed at least 104 Palestinians, including 24 children, according to medical sources in Gaza. The strikes mark a clear violation of the U.S.-brokered cease-fire framework. Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, issued an order for “immediate, forceful” strikes stating that Israel would not be constrained in defending its forces. According to reports, his office framed the escalation as necessary deterrence.
President Trump reiterated that “nothing is going to jeopardise” the cease-fire — yet his statement includes a paradoxical element: he affirmed Israel “has the right to hit back” if its soldiers are killed. According to Al Jazeera, Trump said Israel’s retaliation following the soldier’s death was justified, and that “Hamas has to behave.” This dual message – backing the truce publicly while implicitly supporting Israeli military action – has left mediators and international observers concerned that U.S. assurances may lack the force needed to prevent further escalation. The cease-fire appears to be undercut by ambiguity in strategic backing.
4. “A parent’s nightmare”: Queen Rania On Gaza, The Ceasefire & The World’s Failure

In a heartfelt BBC Panorama interview, Queen Rania of Jordan spoke openly about the genocidal war in Gaza and the international community’s failure to stop it. She described the last two years as “a parent’s nightmare,” asking people to imagine what it’s like to see their children suffering, starving, and trembling in fear while the world watches and does nothing. Her emotional words painted a picture of daily life for Palestinian families and how powerless parents have felt throughout this time.
Interestingly, Queen Rania also praised former US President Donald Trump for his role in applying pressure on Israel. She said that Trump “was the first president in a long time to actually apply pressure on Israel” and credited him with helping to secure a recent ceasefire. That ceasefire, she noted, led to the release of 20 Israeli captives and around 250 Palestinian prisoners, as well as 1,700 detainees held without charge. She added that Trump’s involvement helped pave the way for humanitarian efforts, including the evacuation of sick and injured children from Gaza.
5. Trade, Tourism, And Ties: Pakistan-Bangladesh Back In Business Together After 20 Years!

On October 27, 2025, Pakistan and Bangladesh convened the 9th Joint Economic Commission (JEC) in Dhaka, marking the first such meeting in two decades. A central topic of discussion was Pakistan’s offer to grant Bangladesh access to the Karachi Port Trust, a strategic move aimed at facilitating Bangladesh’s trade with China, Central Asia, and other regional markets. By providing an alternative maritime route, this initiative allows Bangladesh to diversify its trade options and reduces reliance on traditional pathways. Experts view this development as particularly significant in the context of Bangladesh’s strained relations with India, making access to Karachi Port a timely and strategic opportunity for Dhaka.

6. Collapse Of Afghanistan-Pakistan Peace Talks In Istanbul – What We Know

On October 28, 2025, peace negotiations between Afghanistan and Pakistan, held in Istanbul, ended without a breakthrough, despite earlier attempts to maintain a ceasefire. The talks, facilitated by Turkey and Qatar, sought to establish a lasting agreement after a series of violent border incidents earlier in the month that had caused significant casualties.
In the days leading up to the Istanbul peace talks, fresh clashes erupted along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, resulting in significant casualties. According to Pakistan’s military, at least five Pakistani soldiers and 25 fighters were killed during these confrontations. Armed groups reportedly attempted to cross from Afghanistan into the Kurram and North Waziristan regions on Friday and Saturday, prompting retaliatory actions. Pakistan accused the Taliban authorities of failing to act against these armed groups operating from Afghan territory, raising concerns about Kabul’s commitment to addressing cross-border terrorism. Afghanistan’s Taliban government, however, rejected these accusations and criticized Pakistan for violating Afghan sovereignty with airstrikes.
7. Meri Zindagi Hai Tu First Teaser Drops – & It Has All The Bilal-Hania Magic Fans Were Waiting For!

The teaser kicks off with Hania looking effortlessly cool and confident. You can immediately tell her character is strong-willed and won’t be easily impressed. Then comes Bilal, full of that macho, confident energy we all love to see.
