Pamaal is a story of Malika and Raza, a married couple who came together from very different walks of life.
Pamaal begins with Malika receiving the Best Writer of the Year award. As she stands on stage, holding the award in her hands, she smiles through tears. And then, in an interview, she starts narrating the story of her life – the journey that brought her here.
Malika lives with her mamu’s family along with her mother after her father’s death. She belongs to a middle-class family. On the other side is Raza, who lives with his brother and sister-in-law and belongs to a rich family. But both Malika and Raza are totally different in nature. Malika wants to be a writer and loves writing stories, while Raza works in a bank and is very choosy and selective.
Malika and Raza meet by coincidence, and Raza falls for her at first sight. He sends his brother and sister-in-law to Malika’s house with a proposal. At the same time, Malika’s cousin Anas (Anni), who is very close to her, also proposes to Malika – but Malika chooses Raza because she sees the reflection of her father in him.
Both get married happily, but soon Raza starts showing signs of being a narcissist. Malika cannot go anywhere without his permission. She cannot talk to her cousin Anni because he once proposed to her. She cannot appoint a maid, cannot wear clothes of her own choice – because Raza wants everything according to his wishes.
Malika stops writing stories because Raza wants her to write only about him and no one else. Soon after, Malika becomes pregnant, and Raza buys her a separate house because the house they were living in originally belonged to his sister-in-law. But even this new house is bought without Malika’s opinion.
Malika starts making friends in the new building, which Raza doesn’t like at first. One day Malika meets Rubab, who also lives there, and they become friends. Rubab asks Malika to write a story for her because she knows some producers and wants to take Malika’s story to them.
Malika makes qorma and, after taking permission from Raza, takes the food and her story to Rubab’s place. But when she reaches, there is an illegal party going on. The moment Malika steps out, the police arrive and arrest everyone present. Malika keeps telling them she is not part of the group, but they still take her with them. When Raza finds out, he rushes to the station and brings Malika out – but he doesn’t say a single word to her. He leaves her at her mamu’s house in the middle of the night.
Malika stays there for months. When Raza finally decides to bring her back, he gets into a fight with the same people because of whom Malika was arrested, and he ends up in the hospital.
Raza’s brother and sister-in-law go to bring Malika home. Malika’s mamu refuses at first and says he will not send her back until Raza himself comes. But when the sister-in-law tells them that Raza is in the hospital, Malika immediately runs to meet him. Both Raza and Malika apologise and decide to start fresh.
But will this continue? Or will Raza go back to his old ways…?
