From McSteamy to a Fighter: Eric Dane’s Battle With ALS and Final Goodbye

There are actors and characters we grow very fond of. And Eric Dane was one of them. We instantly fell in love with him as Mark Sloan — aka McSteamy — on Grey’s Anatomy. The charm, the confidence, the layered vulnerability, the whole vibe — the best one could ask for in a character who could easily have been just a pretty face. McSteamy and McDreamy (Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey) were the dream team. Their banter, their loyalty, their complicated brilliance made Seattle Grace feel like home. When Mark Sloan said his final goodbye on the show, we were not ready. And now, losing Eric feels personal in a way that’s hard to explain.

Waking up from an hour’s-long nap to the news of his death at 53, nearly a year after revealing his ALS diagnosis, didn’t feel real. My mind couldn’t wrap around it. I had to reread the headline. I had to ask if this was true. It felt like losing a piece of television history — and a piece of something we grew up with.

Dane had publicly shared his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in April 2025. In the months that followed, he spoke with heartbreaking honesty about the progression of the disease. He revealed he had lost the use of his right arm and feared what would come next. “I wake up every day and I’m immediately reminded that this is happening,” he said in an interview on Good Morning America. Still, he insisted he didn’t believe it was the end of his story. Even as his body weakened, his spirit fought to stay steady, for his daughters, for his work, for himself.

In his final public appearance, during a Giving Tuesday panel with ALS advocacy groups, Dane described living with the illness as “so horrible,” admitting he had every reason to retreat from the world — but didn’t. He spoke about wanting to raise awareness, to cut through the “hurdles and bureaucracy” surrounding treatment and research. There was anger there, but also determination. He wanted people to understand what ALS does. He wanted change.

ALS, short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks motor neurons — the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. As those neurons deteriorate, muscles weaken and eventually waste away. Over time, people with ALS can lose the ability to move, speak, swallow and ultimately breathe independently. There is currently no cure, though treatments can help slow progression and improve quality of life.

Following the news of his passing, tributes poured in from friends and former co-stars. Patrick Dempsey shared a heartfelt message honoring his on-screen brother, remembering their years side by side and the bond they built both on and off camera. Alyssa Milano also paid tribute, reflecting on his warmth and presence, calling him someone who brought depth and heart into every room he entered.

Ellen Pompeo revealed earlier that when she first heard about Dane’s diagnosis, she immediately reached out to him. The two had shared so much history on Grey’s Anatomy, and her message, she said, came from a place of deep care and disbelief. The cast that once felt like a fictional hospital family has, over the years, proven to be something very real.

Eric Dane wasn’t just McSteamy. He was a father, a colleague, a fighter. He was honest about his fear. Honest about his anger. Honest about not always being in a good spirit — and yet continuing anyway. That vulnerability made him even more loved. When Mark Sloan died on Grey’s, we grieved a character. Now, we grieve the man. And it hurts in a way that only losing someone you grew up watching can hurt — quietly, deeply, personally.

Fans will also see him one final time on screen in Euphoria season 3. Dane had completed filming his scenes for the upcoming season before his passing, reprising his role as Cal Jacobs. For many, those episodes will now carry an entirely different weight — not just another performance, but a final goodbye. Watching him again won’t just be about the storyline; it will be about honoring the man behind the character, knowing he continued to work and create even while quietly battling something so devastating.
