The first episode of the new drama serial Rang De aired last night, featuring Sabeena Farooq, Shahzad Sheikh, and Azfar Rehman. While it’s still early to pass judgment on the drama as a whole, there were a few moments in the premiere that immediately caught our attention.

Rang De, presented by GEO TV and 7th Sky Productions, tells the story of Dua, a young and spirited girl living with her mother and grandmother, who run their own small business, and Ahad, a young man who manages an antique shop alongside his mother, Samina. The drama is penned by Rukhsana Nigar and directed by Syed Ahmad Kamran, featuring a talented cast including Sabeena Farooq, Shahzad Sheikh, Samina Ahmed, Sunita Marshall, Sohail Sameer, Azfar Rehman, and more. It is produced by Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi under the banner of 7th Sky Entertainment.
The first episode had a steady pace, introducing the main characters and the storyline without overwhelming the audience. Here are the three things that stood out the most:
1. Dua (played by Sabeena Farooq) as a modern-day YouTuber
One of the most refreshing aspects of the first episode was how Rang De seamlessly incorporated contemporary trends into its storytelling by portraying Dua as a young, spirited YouTuber. Rather than just a gimmick, this choice adds depth to her character, highlighting her independence, creativity, and the way she engages with the world around her. It was particularly interesting to see how social media was woven into the narrative – in a scene, when a motorbike accident occurs, Dua uses her platform to speak up for the person who got hurt, threatening to “go viral” if the injustice isn’t addressed. This not only establishes her as socially conscious and confident but also reflects how digital platforms play a real-world role in amplifying voices today. It’s a clever way to connect the story to a younger audience while keeping the drama grounded in real-life scenarios.
2. Azfar Rehman’s Character
Azir, played by Azfar Rehman, instantly commands attention as a character who is clearly not a positive presence in the story. From the very first frame to the last moment of his scene, Azfar delivers a performance that is both striking and powerful. His dialogue delivery is sharp, confident, and precise, perfectly conveying Azir’s sense of privilege, authority, and underlying menace. Even though it was just one scene, his expressions, body language, and commanding presence made a lasting impact, creating intrigue around his motives and hinting at the influence he may have on characters like Dua and Ahad. Azfar’s portrayal proves that a well-executed performance, even in a single scene, can make a character unforgettable and adds tension and complexity to the drama from the very start.
3. Dua, Her Grandmother, and Her Mother’s Small Dyeing Business
Another refreshing aspect of the story is the way Rang De portrays women taking charge of their lives and livelihoods. Traditionally, we often see women stepping out for jobs or struggling with societal judgments and unwanted attention, but this story flips that narrative. Dua, along with her mother and grandmother, are shown as independent, capable women running a small clothing dyeing business right from their home. This not only highlights their entrepreneurial spirit but also gives the audience a glimpse into the challenges and joys of managing a family-run business. The drama’s focus on these three strong women is both novel and relevant, showing how traditional settings can blend with modern aspirations. By showcasing women as self-reliant, skilled, and ambitious, the creators continue to push the story forward with socially conscious themes while keeping it grounded in relatable, real-world scenarios.
While Ahad, played by Shahzad Sheikh, comes across as a lighthearted and approachable character in the first episode, he isn’t arrogant or difficult to deal with; instead, he is soft-spoken, helpful, and genuinely kind-hearted. With just one episode aired so far, it will be interesting to see if the drama continues to live up to the strong impression it set with his introduction.
Rang De is airing daily on GEO Entertainment at 9:00 PM.
