“Mein iss film industry ki aakhri Mughal hoon.” – Asha Bhosle

“I am the last Mughal of this film industry.” Asha Bhosle – 1933 – 2026 . Her voice never needed an introduction. She was nine years old when she lost her father and had to start singing to help her family survive. That little girl from Sangli, Maharashtra, went on to record over 12,000 songs across eight decades — in more than 20 languages.
While her sister Lata Mangeshkar became known for singing virtuous heroines, Asha carved her own path — bold, playful, fearless — giving voice to a side of Indian womanhood no one else dared to sing.
She sang for Meena Kumari, for Zeenat Aman, for Kajol. For generations of leading ladies — yet somehow, it was always unmistakably her voice you heard.
Her awards were a legacy of the immense talent she possessed and her even more monumental contriobution to the industry. Asha Bhosle, in her career, garnered seven Filmfare Awards, two National Film Awards, two Grammy nominations, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Vibhushan.
And just last month, at 92, she released a new song with Gorillaz. Still creating. Till the very end.
“Mein iss film industry ki aakhri Mughal hoon.” I am the last Mughal of this film industry.
She was right. And now she is gone, but her music lives on forever.
