A tragic accident in the early hours of Monday turned a routine tourist trip into a heartbreaking disaster in Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district, where a jeep carrying visitors to Fairy Meadows plunged into a deep ravine and was swept away in a stream, leaving all passengers dead.

According to initial reports from police and rescue officials, the incident took place around 3 PM on June 1, 2026, along the Tattu Raikot Road near Chilas, which is the main and extremely challenging route that leads toward the famous Fairy Meadows destination. The vehicle was travelling uphill towards the tourist spot when it lost control on the mountainous track, fell into a gorge, and was then carried further down by fast-moving water in the Tattu Nullah area.
The jeep was carrying seven people in total — six tourists and the driver. Rescue teams later confirmed that all seven lost their lives in the crash. The driver has been identified as Ziaullah, a resident of Darel in Diamer district, while the tourists included visitors from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab, though full identities are still being officially confirmed in some cases
Fairy Meadows, located in one of the most scenic but difficult-to-access regions of Pakistan, is known for its breathtaking view of Nanga Parbat, but the journey to reach it is equally famous for being dangerous. The accident happened on a stretch of road that is narrow, uneven, and surrounded by steep drops — a route where even experienced local drivers face constant risk, especially during peak travel season when tourist traffic increases.
Immediately after the incident, rescue teams, police, and local volunteers reached the site and began search operations. However, the difficult terrain, combined with the force of the water in the ravine, made recovery efforts extremely challenging. Authorities have since shifted the bodies to nearby medical facilities for identification and legal procedures, while investigations have been launched to understand the exact cause of the crash.
What makes this tragedy even more painful is how common such accidents are becoming in northern Pakistan. Every year, thousands of tourists travel to Gilgit-Baltistan, drawn by its mountains and valleys, but the same landscapes also expose them to dangerous roads, sudden weather changes, and unpredictable driving conditions. In this case, a moment of lost control on a steep section was enough to turn a scenic journey into a fatal one.
By Monday evening, official statements confirmed that the area had been secured and traffic on the route was partially restricted while clearing and investigation work continued. Authorities have also reiterated warnings for tourists to avoid unnecessary risks and ensure experienced drivers are used on high-altitude routes.
This incident has once again raised serious questions about travel safety infrastructure in Pakistan’s northern regions, especially on routes that lead to major tourist destinations like Fairy Meadows, where beauty and danger often exist side by side.
