The first episode of the new drama serial Aik Mohabbat Aur aired last night, here’s what it was all about – and our thoughts on the first episode!

Aik Aur Mohabbat, Ahad Raza Mir, Maya Ali, Aik Mohabbat Aur,
Aik Mohabbat Aur Episode 1 Review Starring Maya Ali and Ahad Raza Mir

The Characters

Haroon and Khushbakht Naz are two lead characters who, while far from run-of-the-mill, offer a realistic portrayal of people we see in our society today.

As an assistant commissioner, Khushbakht Naz is a refreshing female lead with a solid, well-defined career—the kind of representation that can inspire young girls to pursue a career.

Haroon, on the other hand, is not your typical flawless hero. He is a journalist who isn’t shy about using his position to manipulate people and misconstrue content for his own benefit.

What makes Haroon’s character so relatable is that he seems to be unaware of his actions or words — despite being so sharp at his job, rightly correcting Maham that ‘no girl is ordinary’, he’s visibly clueless about his own problematic remarks.

Watching his journey to find his true calling promises to be interesting.

Khushbakht Naz is also a single mother, managing both her career and personal life alone. This aspect of her character is particularly commendable, echoing the reality of so many working single mothers out there. Highlighting their demanding schedules and unique challenges in a factual, matter-of-fact way—rather than leaning into a sad or depressing narrative—is incredibly refreshing.

Furthermore, Haroon’s manipulative tendencies aren’t limited to his content creation; he is also arrogant and judgmental. His condescending comment about a female colleague’s lipstick isn’t delivered with loud, dramatic flair; instead, it is thrown in as a casual aside, which is exactly what makes it feel so accurate. It perfectly captures the everyday, low-grade casual sexism that women constantly and quietly navigate in professional spaces. Through Haroon’s character, the drama effectively addresses several prevalent issues in our society.

An Overwhelming Power Cast

While it was great to see Maya Ali and Ahad Raza Mir onscreen for the very first time, with characters that reflected real life people we have met, know or been ourselves, the first episode fielded multiple characters which made it a bit hard to keep track of their relevance in the narrative or their relationship to each other. The last few minutes of the episode introduced multiple new faces who seemed to give off main character energy, albeit their appearance was fleeting and hence, left more questions than answers.

The scenes delivered parallel stories, switching from Khushbakht to Haroon’s story, which helped give us some insight into the characters. However, characters like Faris, Seema – Khushbakht’s sister, Haseeb and some others of whom we only caught a brief glimpse, seemed to be left out of the first episode details. Hajra Yamin’s short yet effective monologue towards the end was an intriguing add-on and kept interest alive as the story clearly focused on the world of media, journalism, manipulatively edited videos and yet, kept a parallel narrative about single mothers, working women, struggling marital relationships in focus.

Final Thoughts

Aik Mohabbat Aur deserves a thumbs up for introducing a story that seems to be fresh out of the box – how the next few episodes deliver and a monumental cast spins a story that takes in politics, media, journalism and the personal lives of those emboiled in it all, is one to watch. We certainly have this new drama on our radar, what about you?
