At least seven people were killed and three others injured after two powerful roadside explosions rocked the Merka Bera area of Bannu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Saturday. According to police officials, the first blast targeted a passenger van travelling from a nearby village towards Bannu city when an improvised explosive device planted along the roadside was detonated. Five passengers died on the spot, while the vehicle was completely destroyed in the impact.

Shortly after the first explosion, a second blast occurred at nearly the same location, this time targeting rescue workers and locals who had rushed to help the victims. Two more people were killed in the second explosion, and three others sustained injuries. Authorities believe the second blast was timed to inflict maximum casualties during rescue efforts, raising concerns over the coordinated nature of the attack.
Security forces and police immediately reached the site, cordoned off the area, and launched a search operation amid fears of additional explosive devices. The injured were shifted to Khalifa Gul Nawaz Teaching Hospital, while the bodies of the deceased were taken for legal and medical formalities. Investigations are ongoing, though no group has claimed responsibility so far.
The incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in parts of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where civilian convoys and law enforcement personnel have repeatedly come under attack in recent months. Officials have described the blasts as a deliberate act of terrorism aimed at destabilising the region and targeting civilians.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi strongly condemned the attack, sought a detailed report from police authorities, and directed immediate assistance for the injured. He also expressed solidarity with the bereaved families, assuring that the provincial government stands with them in this difficult time and will ensure full support and medical care for the victims.
The twin blasts have once again deepened concerns over the rising wave of violence in the region, particularly attacks that directly target civilians and even rescue efforts. For residents of Bannu, the incident is another painful reminder of how fragile everyday security has become, with routine travel on certain routes carrying life-threatening risks. As investigations continue, the focus remains on identifying those responsible and preventing further attacks in an already volatile security landscape.
