I have seen practically every single Harlan Coben show that Netflix has released over the years. Though I liked each one of them in different ways, there has always been some formula common amongst them – an impossible mystery, a suspicion that falls upon everyone, and finally a huge revelation at the end of the show. That is why, when I began watching I Will Find You, I thought it would be similar binge-worthy experience.

What I found myself unprepared for was just how personally attached I would get. This isn’t your typical whodunit narrative, because at the heart of it is something incredibly personal, which is the determination of a father not to give up on hope. It does a better job of blending suspense and emotion than any other Harlan Coben adaptation, and at the end of the day, I knew that I cared about the characters a lot more than I cared about solving their problems.
Here are 8 reasons why this show took me by surprise!
1. The Premise Is One of the Best I’ve Seen in Years
Some series may require three episodes to get going. For I Will Find You, it will only take one scene. A father is serving a life sentence for murdering his young son. Then, years later, someone hands him a photograph that appears to show the boy alive. That’s it. That’s the hook. This is one of those rare storylines that make one curious from the very beginning. What is the authenticity of this photo? Did something go wrong with the investigation back then? Does someone play mind games with him? In just one episode, you already start connecting the dots yourself.
2. Sam Worthington Delivers a Surprisingly Emotional Performance
David Burroughs could have easily been written as a conventional thriller protagonist, but Sam Worthington gives him remarkable emotional depth. He isn’t fearless or larger than life – he’s a grieving father who has spent years carrying guilt, regret, and unanswered questions. Worthington never overplays the role. Instead, he lets David’s exhaustion and quiet determination speak for themselves. By the final episodes, I wasn’t watching someone trying to solve a mystery; I was watching a father desperately trying to reclaim the life that had been stolen from him.
3. The Story Never Forgets That It’s About Family
The mystery is compelling, but what stayed with me was the emotional exploration of family. David’s determination isn’t fueled by revenge or the desire to prove his innocence – it comes from the possibility that his son might still need him. At the same time, the series explores how grief affects everyone differently. Cheryl, Rachel, and the people closest to David have all spent years trying to live with unimaginable loss, and each character responds to that pain in their own way. Those emotional threads give the story far more depth than a typical crime thriller.
4. The Supporting Cast Makes the Mystery Richer
One of the series’ biggest strengths is that every major character feels like they have a life outside the central mystery. Cheryl’s struggle to reconcile the past with new revelations is heartbreaking, while Rachel’s unwavering determination to uncover the truth provides some of the show’s most satisfying moments. Even characters like Max Williams and Sarah Greer are written with understandable motivations rather than existing simply to mislead the audience. Because everyone has something to protect, every interaction carries tension, making the mystery feel layered rather than manufactured.
5. The Twists Feel Earned Instead of Forced
One thing Harlan Coben adaptations are known for is shocking twists, but not all twists are created equal. What impressed me about I Will Find You is that its biggest reveals don’t exist purely for surprise. Instead, they force you to reinterpret earlier scenes, reassess characters, and reconsider everything you thought you knew. The clues are planted carefully enough that the revelations feel satisfying rather than random. By the time the final pieces fall into place, the story rewards careful attention instead of relying on cheap misdirection.
6. The Visual Storytelling Adds to the Emotion
The cinematography isn’t flashy, but it’s incredibly effective. The scenes at the prison are cold, cramped, and emotionally stifling, which is reflective of David’s state of mind. As the scope of the inquiry expands, the visuals become increasingly varied but never lose the feeling of uneasiness that dominates all of the scenes. Also worth mentioning is the fact that the camera frequently rests on facial expressions rather than moving to the next element of the plot.
7. It Balances Suspense With Genuine Heart
Too often, thrillers get so caught up in surprising their viewers that they fail to develop their characters along the way. This is not the case for I Will Find You; the series ensures that each plot twist has an emotional effect, and that each decision has its basis in love, guilt, or hope. The series realizes that not everything will be remembered forever, but the feelings will be.
8. The Ending Delivers Emotion Instead of Just Answers
Many mysteries fall short at the ending, but not I Will Find You; this story lands on its feet. It is not an ending that gives away the plot in order to give an easy answer to the puzzle. The most important thing about the ending is that it provides closure for characters who have endured years of sorrow. What makes this ending remarkable is not its ability to shock you with the last revelation, but rather its reminder of what the story was truly about all along: hope, forgiveness, and the extraordinary lengths a parent will go for their child.
It succeeds because it perfects the balance between suspense and emotion. While the twists will have you watching in one sitting, it’s the characters that stick with you once the credits finish rolling. Have you checked out I Will Find You yet?
