What BTS in Brussels Taught Me About the Unexpected Magic of K-Pop Fandom

An outsider’s guide to the wholesome, non-toxic world of the BTS Army—and why a K-pop stadium crowd might actually hold the key to world peace.

BTS World Tour and the Magic of K-Pop Fandom

”They’re back, and I absolutely cannot miss the comeback concert,” I told my friend.

To be fair, she’s the certified K-Pop devotee. I’m just the casual listener who fell hard for the massive BTS hits the world loves to love—yes, I’m talking about Dynamite, Butter, and my personal favorite, My Universe. Call me old school or mainstream, but if you’re going to experience K-Pop live, you might as well go straight to the gold standard: BTS.

And so, the deal was struck. Destination: Brussels.

Set against the background buzz of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, an escalating European heatwave, and a city fueled by waffles and fries, we arrived to witness the pop phenomenon that has swept the globe. Outside the stadium, fans braved a scorching near 40°C rise in the mercury just to glimpse their idols. Having waited four long years for the group to complete their mandatory military service, the BTS Army wasn’t about to let a summer heatwave stand in their way.

Armed with sunscreen, paper fans, and hint of burgundy-red, (to match the album aesthetics), ARIRANG fans from every corner of the earth descended on Europe. As the once-spacious Belgian trams burst at the seams, it became clear that Brussels had never seen an energy quite like this.

In the world of K-pop, you’re usually either fully obsessed or totally indifferent.

I exist in the quiet space in between: a casual observer who lives for a great vibe, even if I don’t know every lyric. But standing in that “no man’s land” gave me the perfect vantage point. It allowed me to see what the die-hard fans might take for granted.

I was there for the band, but I stayed for the crowd. And here is what I learned from the happiest, most wholesome fandom on earth…

1. K-Pop Concerts, My Safe Zone

Ever felt absolutely safe in a crowd of 60,000 people? Just go to a K-Pop concert and you’ll understand why. There’s people in the queue willing to help you find a quicker way to get to the front. Where to find a freebie – a banner, a giveaway, a food kiosk or even a toilet. Strangers strike up conversations, share moments from past concerts and what they expect in this one. If you have a younger audience member with you, they will go out of their way to accommodate them. It’s simple non-toxic humanity at your service, and you don’t have to be surprised, it’s what we were all supposed to do till doubt, suspicion and bad experiences damaged our natural instincts and made us think twice before we reached out to help someone – what if there’s a hidden agenda, you ask?

Take heart, there’s no hidden agenda in a harmless conversation you just happen to get into with a K-Pop fan sharing the ticket line with you. It’s really exactly what it seems – a conversation.

2. The Anticipation is Part of the Experience and it’s Free

You don’t have to pay for a front row seat when you spot a crowd of K-Pop enthusiasts dining on Korean food in the city centre. You know they’re there for a purpose, and striking up random conversations at a coffee shop or local metro in the concert city because you spot the shared love for the music, (and the telling red concert colours, if it’s BTS you’re at this summer) is one of the most natural things to do. You exchange numbers, offer tips to first timers, and even plan a meetup after, time permitting. It’s all part of the build-up to the real thing and it’s just as exciting and wholesome – because there are no hidden agendas, just a joint appreciation of music that unites a total of 150 to 200 million fans worldwide. Yes, that’s a rough estimate and I bet we’re way beyond that mark as I write.

And yes it’s wholesome to know that you are merely engaging with each other for the love of the music and the people who made it happen.

3. When Giveaways Are Just What Some Fans Do

When you’re finally seated, awaiting the entry, swaying to the music and the person infront of you hands you a hand-crocheted key chain with a chocolate, just like that – a fan giveaway with no strings attached. This is a signature beat of K-Pop fans. They find purpose in giving.

It’s not commercial and it’s definitely not a paid hustle.

There’ll be bookmarks at another concert, perhaps a banner or bracelet at another, all handmade, merely to add to your concert memories. Not the merchandise you bought at the kiosk, but an organic takeaway from the place that brought together thousands of fans swaying to the beat of one of the fastest growing movements in the world.

This, set against the backdrop of the Iran-US war? That sounds like peace to me – simple, uncomplicated and with no strings attached.

4. The Cross-Cultural Vibe that’s Transnational. World Peace Anyone?

And we’re talking 160 to 200 countries where K-Pop is followed as a musical genre with an active fan base. From the South Asian lady I met at the Brussels concert, a student from Amsterdam who had flown in just to attend the concert, to the Parisian fan I met in France, a retired banker who, along with her husband, had grown to love the genre because she shipped Korean dramas at a younger age and the actors led her to the music – the rest was a love story that stayed.

K-Pop fandom defies language, culture and ethnic background. It is a community all by itself and it relies on sharing the love for a movement that is grounded in respect, good music, uplifting lyrics and perhaps, showing the world that there is a way to come together through what unites us rather than what divides.

5. The Moment it All Comes Together

And of course it would be unfair not to address the people who make it all happen – the band itself. BTS moments are prizeworthy for every fan, but perhaps for those who’ve followed their journey over the past years, the moment the band members come together and take hold of the mic to talk to fans at the concert, express their gratitude and share their thoughts, unfiltered, is perhaps the golden moment for most fandoms.

A heart-to-heart conversation ensues where band members share a private space with the thousands who braved flight schedules, family plans and yes, the sweltering heat, to witness a concert that will shape a major part of their memory board for years to come. The members share candid conversations, and what’s doubly heartening to watch is the camaraderie and respect they demonstrate to fellow band members, hence, intentionally or just by default, sending out the same messaging to their fans. From the get-go, BTS ensures that each band member gets equal space on the stage; the cameras, lighting, choreography all come together so that no fan is dissapointed that they didn’t get enough of their favourite singer, and no band member is left out – you get an experience that chooses respect, equality and humility over everything else.

Over numbers and viral moments.

And if you’re wondering why the fandom is so unique, it is because K-Pop music culture has worked hard to uphold this narrative in its relationship and communications as band members. While the song lyrics are just one part, and a huge part of the reason fans love them, it is also the example these celebrities set on a global stage, that set them apart from the rest.

Hence the fan love is real – headlined with respect and a whole lot of trust that these ‘larger than life’ celebrities will not let them down – influencers in every sense of the word.

And that’s why K-Pop is slowly and steadily, ruling the world.

It’s a quiet revolution that signals peace, respect and a call back to humanity – the very founding principles that perhaps ruled our kindergarten class, are back in business. Except, this time, it’s not just a business, it’s a quiet hope that the world jumps onto the Korean music bandwagon. Because, if you’re a K-Pop fan, can you really fight the world when you can win everyone over with a song?

And with that, world leaders, I hope you’re listening. If not, I’d be happy to send you the latest BTS album – ARIRANG.

To quote a part of the lyrics:
”Name a place that I could breathe on this map,…” Lyrics from BTS-SWIM – and if you can name a place, I’d say it’s a K-Pop concert – that’s the map. That’s it.

So breathe on K-Pop fandom, you’re marking your place on the world map and the best part is, it’s everywhere you are. You take it with you.

And it’s called peace – may the force be with you. And may you help spread it faster, faster than any other ‘ARMY’ in the world!
