Stop everything because the official trailer for Mitti De Baway is finally out, and this one had us going, “Okay, wow.” The highly anticipated Green Entertainment drama wastes absolutely no time pulling you in.

The trailer is gripping, fast-paced and gives us just enough of the story, characters and world without giving away all the good stuff. We get glimpses of a story that begins in the 1990s before moving into 2002, setting up a narrative that already feels layered with a backstory, secrets and unfinished business. And then there is that Punjab backdrop, which gives the drama a raw, earthy feel that immediately stands out. There is something about seeing this kind of story rooted so deeply in its setting that makes it feel more real, more lived-in and, honestly, a lot more intriguing.

The title Mitti De Baway, which translates roughly to “clay dolls” or “clay toys,” also carries a deeper meaning rooted in Punjabi folklore. The idea revolves around a woman waiting for an absent beloved and longing for a child, eventually shaping a small doll from clay, dressing it and treating it almost like the child she wishes she had while she waits for the person she loves to return. It is a simple but rather heartbreaking image, and it fits perfectly with the themes the trailer seems to be building around love, longing, honour, sacrifice and staying connected to one’s roots.

There is already a sense that these characters are carrying more than what they say out loud, and the title feels like another piece of that larger emotional puzzle.

Bala And Bilquees’ Worlds Collide

The first half of the trailer focuses on bringing Bala and Bilquees into each other’s orbit, with Fazal Hussain and Aena Asif playing their younger versions. We see their worlds taking shape before the story eventually moves forward, and there is clearly a lot of history between these characters waiting to unfold.

Wahaj Ali’s look deserves a special mention because the man has absolutely committed to this character.

The get-up is a solid 10/10, and you can actually see the preparation that has gone into Bala. He looks rough, reckless, unpredictable and genuinely dangerous, which instantly makes you wonder about his past and, more importantly, what could he possibly have done to end up spending years in jail? The trailer gives us no easy answers, and we are very much okay with that because now the guessing has officially begun.

Then there is Mahira Khan as Bilquees, who appears to exist in a completely different kind of world. She is the peer of her area, someone with authority and influence, and the trailer makes it clear that Bilquees is not simply a character standing around waiting for the story to happen to her. She has her own presence and power.

Mahira is particularly impressive here because it is not only the dialogue delivery that catches attention; her eyes are doing half the talking too.

There is an intensity and restraint to her performance that makes you want to know what Bilquees knows, what she has experienced and exactly how her path becomes connected to Bala’s.

And yes, Wahaj speaking Punjabi has already won us over. There is something about hearing him fully inhabit the language and character that makes Bala feel even more convincing, and lowkey, more Punjabi dialogue please.

And Then The Trailer Gets Even More Serious

The second half is where Mitti De Baway really starts playing with our curiosity. The tone shifts, the stakes reveal themselves and suddenly there are far more questions than answers. What happened? Why did it happen? Who knows what? And what exactly is being kept hidden? The trailer does a good job of giving us pieces without handing over the entire puzzle, which is exactly what a first trailer should do. Instead of explaining everything, it leaves enough ambiguity to have viewers already coming up with theories before the drama has even premiered.

The ensemble cast is another reason this drama already feels like a big one, with Noor Ul Hasan, Junaid Khan, Hina Afridi, Mubashir Mehmood, Samiya Mumtaz, Amar Khan, Uzma Hassan, Anika Zulfiqar, Ahmed Randhawa and Faryal Mehmood joining Wahaj and Mahira.

Behind the scenes, the drama also has some very familiar names. It is written by Faiza Iftikhar, whose credits include Pehli Si Mohabbat, Prem Gali and Ranjha Ranjha Kardi, while Syed Wajahat Hussain is directing, having previously worked on Case No. 9, Faraar, Khaie and Ishq Jalebi. With Tehreem Chaudhary producing, there is already plenty of reason to expect Mitti De Baway to become one of those dramas everyone starts talking about once it hits screens.

For a first look, the trailer has done exactly what it needed to do: it has made us curious without ruining the story. The performances look promising, the setting is gorgeous in its own rugged way, the mystery is already getting to us and the Bala-Bilquees dynamic has serious potential. Most importantly, Mitti De Baway feels like it has a story beyond just romance, with its themes of love, sacrifice, honour and belonging woven into a much bigger world. If the trailer is anything to go by, Green Entertainment may have another major hit on its hands.
