5 Times Aina Should’ve Walked Out of Amaan’s Life

And why she didn’t. Yeh Dil Mera has us stumped!

“Aisa lagta hai mein tumhein jaanti hi nahi,” a helpless Aina says to the clearly psychotic Amaan in the 13th. episode of Yeh Dil Mera, and we, the audience, let out a sigh of relief: Finally! The good news is, that Aina baby has decided to pay attention to Amaan’s abnormal behavior. The bad news is, the realisation is a tad bit late. She’s standing in his room, looking gorgeous in a red lehnga as his bride, when she summons up the courage to confront his mood swings that can put an extremely hormonal teenager to shame.

As a passionate observer I feel like pulling my hair out and shaking her, just like Amaan did a few episodes ago, and reminding her that this very man had told you to step away and “find a nice man who will keep you happy” because he clearly won’t.

But no, Aina being her naïve self, (and understandably so), decides to go ahead with the wedding. Does she, like all desi parents, believe that marriage is the magical cure to all ailments? Well, in the case at hand, marriage has certainly worsened the situation. All hell has broken loose and Amaan’s (negative) emotions are flowing freely.

Yeh Dil Mera episode 13 set the tone for the relationship dynamics of the lead pair. While Ahad is extremely convincing as a man battling with conflicting emotions, Sajal plays the newly wed, who’s having to face the sporadic behaviour of her husband, to perfection. She is confused, upset, and hopelessly in love. And it is this very love that Amaan is taking advantage of, because there were innumerable moments in this episode where Aina should’ve just held up her lehnga and walked out of the creepy lover boy’s dark and dingy abode.

Let’s have a look at those moments.

1. When Amaan scoffs at Aina for crying on her rukhsati

Umm if she can’t cry at her rukhsati, then when can she cry? On your funeral? You insensitive man! This was the first cue for Aina to demand Amaan to stop the car or at least drive her right back to the loving arms of Agha Jaan. Instead, she looks perplexed and, might I add, a little guilty as she offers the explanation: “Mein apna ghar chor rahi thi … apne Agha Jaan ko chor rahi thi!”

On the other hand, Amaan’s upset because Aina is crying for a man who killed his parents. If we look at things from his perspective, Mir Farooq doesn’t deserve an iota of care and here is a woman, whom he apparently loves, crying at the thought of leaving him – she loves the man he can’t wait to kill. The miserable drive ends and we arrive at the second moment where Aina should’ve called him out.

2. When Amaan walks up the stairs, leaving Aina all alone in the dark and lonely living room with her heavy lehnga

This wasn’t the welcome Aina deserved. It’s the age of Uber and irrational decisions! She could’ve just Ubered her way out of this uncourteous man’s life. But as we established earlier, brides don’t ride back to their homes mere minutes after rukhsati. That’s not how it rolls. Well, it should! We need to teach women to not let any person hurt them, even if it’s their fresh-out-of-the-oven husband.

Anyway, poor Aina struggles her way upstairs and wait, … what? Where is the traditional bombardment of red flowers, scented candles, and a smiling husband?

This takes us to our third moment:

3. When Aina enters a room which could very well belong to a distasteful mass murderer

Everything’s spick and span, not the remotest hint of flower petals in sight and neither is Amaan’s cheery disposition. He looks like he needs a heavy dose of Ispaghol. And Aina clearly needs to woman up, sit him down, and ask: ‘Bhai, what the hell is going on?”

Apparently, that’s too much to ask.

Cast of yeh Dil Mera

Imagine yourself in a new place which you plan to call home, with a man you trust and love. Aina is taking in the unusualness of the situation, as conveyed by Sajal’s brilliant expressions, but she doesn’t question Amaan’s intentions. Yes, he’s been behaving oddly, but maybe he’s nervous just like her. Also, he doesn’t have family members to help him out. And he did seem upset about her bawling at the thought of living with him for the rest of her life. There are a million reasons to justify his behavior.

But nothing justifies this fourth occurrence:

4. When Amaan leaves Aina in the room to go play his beloved piano!

Yes, this man actually did that. It was your decision to marry a murderer’s daughter. Now, deal with it. Instead, he yells at Aina and orders her to wait upstairs when she playfully asks him: “Mujhe oopar bitha kar tum yahan piano baja rahe ho.”
This is the moment when Aina is jerked out of her dazed state. She gets angry, thankfully. And proceeds to take off her gajras. I hope against hope that she’ll lock the door and not let that manipulative man enter her life ever again. But sigh, Farhat Ishtiaq has romance on her mind. Amaan enters, very emotionally remembers his dead family, and all is forgiven.

For the past 20 years, no one has loved Amaan or even cared about him, while Aina has been spoiled rotten by her Agha Jaan. So when he reminds Aina that he is her “laadla” and hence, she must forgive all his wrongdoings, she smiles. Yes she does.

This is a hint into their future. Amaan will torture Aina, then apologize, and she’ll forgive him. The toxic cycle will continue until Aina uncovers the truth.

The last and the fifth moment was:

5. When the happy couple – yes they woke up happy, (well at least Aina did) – greets Khala and Bua at the door, and in comes Ali Bukhsh.

Ladies remember, Amaan saw this man kill his parents and little sister Ashoo. Those gunshots have been echoing in his mind, every single night, for the past twenty years. How many nights does that make? Well, enough to hate Ali Bukhsh’s guts.

But Aina doesn’t know that. You cannot misbehave with her and order her to “smile” just moments after insulting a man, whom she doesn’t think of as a servant. She should’ve stepped right out with Ali Bukhsh and preserved her sanity. But being the nice girl that she is, she only jerks her jerk of a husband’s hand away.

The silver lining is, that when Amaan patronizes her for the sixth time, she walks away saying, “mujhe tumse koi baat hi nahi karni” leaving Amaan and his meaningless apologies.

Personally, I don’t believe he wishes to hurt Aina. She is just collateral damage in his war against Agha Jaan. He wants people to start suspecting Mir Farooq, so he utters things like, “Kya pata unhon ne doosri shaadi kari ho”, which hurt Aina. He realizes that, but in the long run he believes he’ll make her understand.

But what he doesn’t realize is, that he won’t be able to undo the damage he’s doing to her and their relationship.

Move on to Yeh Dil Mera Episode 14 to see how it unfolds further. Will Aina deliver us a 6th. time she should have left Amaan, and doesn’t?

Best Dressed & the not so …??? Listen in and tell us what you think?

Why I watched MPTH, despite not wanting to!
