Prem Gali – When Comedy and Romance have a purpose!
If you’re like me and tired of the daily Pakistani Drama conspiracy theories starring extra marital affairs, the scheming saas, toxic sister relationships and the inevitable pyar ka 3-sided figure (love triangle) – you will welcome Prem Gali like a breath of fresh air!
Faiza Iftikhar and Qasim Ali Mureed have come together to pull off a gem of a story, production, script and thought-provoking dialogue that makes us smile one moment and become teary-eyed the next.
And … the latest episode of Prem Gali really did it for me!
Really, it did! As I settled on the couch along with my notebook, to jot down the finer points of the episode for FUCHSIA Drama Gup morning, my husband retired to his Ipad (not upto consuming much of the Pakistani drama genre, him!) But I insisted he watch along with me, if anything we did end up smiling together … (Now if it were Jalan, we might have done so too, but the smile would have been more of an oops, have drama plots sunk to an all time low?)
Lucky for me, it was Prem Gali and it was a 50 minutes well spent!
Jahez – Is It Ever Okay?
From Khaali Haath Apni Betion Ko Koi Ruskhsat Nahi Karta to Karna Parhta Hai, Kabhi Khushi Se Aur Kabhi Apni Izzat Bachaane Ko, to Jahez Tau Khairaat Aur Bheek Se Bhi Badtar Hai to Apni Khushi Se Ya Apni Haisiat Se Beti Ko Dena Aik Baat Hai, Lekin Kisi Ke Khauf Se Ya Majboori Se Aik Aur baat Hai …
Faiza Iftikhar has cleverly worked in every argument we love to champion when it comes to jahez. From the defending it as the right of our daughters, to saving our izzat before the dreaded dulhay ki amma, Jahez is that one love affair we can’t ever break up from – we love to hate it, but we still engage in it – it’s like an unhealthy addiction, and we find cause to defend it, and abuse it, all at once!
Kar Loon Gi Baqi Logon Ki Mohabbat Ki Qadar – Pehle Apni Qadar Kar Loon? Fari’s words sink in faster than a drowning man calling for help! But is our society ready to let our daughters build self-esteem and self-value – Apni Qadar?
Prem Gali, in one neatly wrapped episode, explained to us, that jahez can be a girl’s right, depending upon how much her parents can give with love and without taking on betahaasha karz. But more importantly, jahez should not be given to devalue the worth of your most precious asset – your daughter. She is priceless – and the susraal waale must know that, and for that alone, jahez might well be a curse rather than a celebrated gift endowed for the love of giving. Get it?
Well, neither did over half the Pakistani population who nodded silently when they watched the episode. You see, if you’re Pakistani, you agree in principle and theory – but when it comes to practice, oh well, out comes the Dawlance ka fridge, the Molty Foam mattress and of course, the bedside lamps complete with a bed, bedsheets, (not one but several different patterns and shades), pillows (several) the flat screen TV, and the list is endless!
Sometimes I do wonder if Princess Kate when she visited Pakistan with Prince William, knew that our impoverished nation has oodles of wealth stocked away when it comes to Jahez! Perhaps enough to make up the GDP of a small country – not joking!
Anyway, back to Prem Gali and the drama, I apologize for digressing. The drama did its job, now you do yours. Stop asking for, or amassing jahez. Oh, and while you do that, do peel an orange or two, and keep the namak daani at hand, if you’ve watched the episode y’all know why!
