5 Interesting Facts To Know About Maula Jatt 1979, Before You Watch The 2022 Version

The Legend Of Maula Jatt has been the talk of the town (for all the right reasons) ever since its trailer was released. Its star-studded cast, intense frames and larger-than-life production is a rare sight when it comes to Pakistani films. It is also being labeled as one of the most expensive films to come out of Pakistan. Although its trailer has raised audiences’ expectations even higher, the film took a decade to see the light of day. But as they say, better late than never!

Maula Jatt is a name that we have all heard growing up, but very few from the younger generation have watched it. “Maulay nu Maula na maray te Maula nahi marda” & “Nawa aaya hai soneya?” are two iconic dialogues that came out of the film and are still cherished to this very day. As the remake is only a few weeks away from its release, we wanted to know more about the cult classic that inspired Bilal Lashari. Thus, after some online sleuthing, we found 5 interesting facts that you’d love to know! Let’s delve right in.

1. Was Inspired By A Story Called Gandasa

Maula Jatt was Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi’s brainchild which was first published as a story called ‘Gandasa.’ The story was borrowed and turned into a film called ‘Wehshi Jatt’ by screenwriter Nasir Adeeb. According to reports, Maula Jatt, which was released in February of 1979, was an unofficial sequel to Wehshi Jatt. The film is about the intense rivalry between Maula Jatt, played by Sultan Rahi, and Noori Natt, which was played by Mustafa Qureshi. It was produced by Sarwar Bhatti and directed by Younis Malik.

2. Paved Way For Several Sequels

After its release, Maula Jatt because a cult classic that many filmmakers and writers would take inspiration from. The movie inspired various sequels, case in point: Maula Jat tey Noorie Nut & Maula Jat in London. In fact, its popularity went beyond films, for the 2002 play Jatt and Bond, Maula Jatt was used as an inspiration.

3. Made It To Bollywood

Reports claim that the 1984 Bollywood Jeene Nahi Doonga was allegedly a remake and/or had a ‘similar plot’ to Maula Jatt’s. The film featured Bollywood veterans Shatrughan Sinha and Dharmendra. The cast also included Raj Babbar and Anita Raj.

4. It Ran For 2 Years Despite Hurdles

Maula Jatt met with a ban not long after its release from the establishment of the time. However, the producer was able to acquire a stay order. The stay order not only gave the film a 2-and-a-half-year run time in cinemas but also helped the film make history as the first Punjabi film to have done so. Unfortunately, Maula Jatt was eventually banned after 2 and half years of its release.

5. Noor Jehan Lent Her Voice For The Film’s Soundtrack

Maula Jatt’s soundtrack features two songs in the voice of the legendary Noor Jehan. ‘Rowe maan te gharoor, ajj hasse majboor’ & ‘Dildar mere pyar kolun bach ke te kithe’ were sung by Malika-e-Tarannum herself.

The Legend Of Maula Jatt is set to release in cinemas worldwide on 13th October 2022. According to the director, the remake has a new story but it does include dialogues from the 1979 classic Maula Jatt.

Its star-studded cast includes Fawad Khan as Maula Jatt, Hamza Ali Abbasi as Noori Natt, Mahira Khan as Mukhoo Jatti, Humaima Malick as Daro, Gohar Rasheed as Makha, and Faris Shafi as Mooda. The cast also has Ali Azmat, Nayyer Ejaz, Shafqat Cheema, Raheela Agha, Zia Khan, and Saima Baloch among others.

It is a directorial venture of Bilal Lashari of Pakistani film ‘Waar’ and has been produced by Ammara Hikmat under the banner of Encyclomedia & Lashari films in association with AAA Motion Pictures.
