A Pioneer of Afghanistan Cricket

But there was much more to Shapoor Zadran than being a fast bowler. He belonged to those players who made the foundation of Afghanistan’s cricket team. In an age when Afghanistan had been finding difficulty in making itself noticeable in international cricket, Shapoor Zadran turned out to be one of the main players of Afghanistan’s national team who won the game for his team.

Shapoor Zadran was born on 8th July 1987 in Logar province of Afghanistan. Part of his childhood years were spent in Peshawar, Pakistan as a refugee where he first started playing cricket along with other star players of the Afghanistan cricket team including Mohammad Nabi, Asghar Afghan, and Dawlat Zadran.

His International Career

Shapoor made his international debut in 2004 for Afghanistan and went on to become one of Afghanistan’s best left arm fast bowlers. His career for Afghanistan spanned from 2009 until 2020 and saw him play:

43 One-Day Internationals (ODIs)
32 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is)

He took:

43 wickets in ODIs
31 wickets in T20Is

Known for his tall frame, aggressive pace and ability to swing the new ball, Shapoor often gave Afghanistan crucial breakthroughs against stronger teams.

Memorable Achievements

He was one of those cricketers whose performance had played a very important part in taking the national side through different ladders of ICC World Cricket League to reach the status of ODIs in 2009, which was a very proud moment for the cricket team of Afghanistan. In 2010, he played a very important part in winning the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier match for his country that guaranteed Afghanistan’s participation in ICC T20 World Cup. He has represented his country in ICC T20 World Cups of 2010, 2012 and 2016, and also has been a part of that team that has made the historical record by participating in the first ICC Cricket World Cup for Afghanistan in 2015. His most memorable innings have been played when he delivered fast-bowling performance in his first ODI match against Netherlands to take four wickets for only 24 runs.

His Battle With Illness

However, in the early months of 2026, there were reports that Shapoor was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

It is an extremely rare disease. Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis can be referred to as an immune system disorder in which the immune system becomes highly active and attacks the healthy organs of the body of the patient instead of providing protection.

He underwent treatment at a hospital in Greater Noida, India. As per reports, he suffered from severe infections while undergoing treatment which made his situation more critical. Even after several months of treatment along with the support from family, friends and former teammates, he passed away from this disease.

A Legacy That Will Live Forever

Immediately after the news of his death became public, there were a number of tributes for him from around the cricketing world. Former teammates, cricket boards, and fans alike regarded him as one of the pioneers who played a key role in turning Afghanistan into a recognized cricketing nation. Many referred to him as a brave competitor, a humble teammate, and a true ambassador of Afghan cricket.

His bravery on the field, determination off the ground and his passion towards his country have made him a hero for millions of Afghans.

Though he is not here anymore, his services to the game of cricket in Afghanistan will always be remembered. The career of every aspiring fast bowler who wishes to wear the Afghanistan cap owes much to Shapoor.

May his soul rest in peace, and may his family and fans be able to cope up during this tough time.
