Can Hamza Convince Fans That Being A Good Husband Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Being A Bad Son?

Hamza has flipped, often enough, I admit. Hence the title for this post might not be totally justified. But Hamza in his current element, reaching out to assist Hala put on her slippers, giving her space, time to think, springing out of bed to bring her lunch, telling her, “I’ll be a major part of your story, whenever you do write it”, is the Hamza that every Hala would love to have in her life.

hamza, mere humsafar

Unfortunately, Hamza telling off his mom and shaking her by the shoulders is not what a hero is cut out to be, possibly a mother-in-law’s worst nightmare? Possibly yes!

But these are the 5 things Hamza did or promised that might make young girls swoon, and red flag potential mothers-in-law to be (Hamza’s moms that is) that all might not be hunky dory in their life once their son decides to tie the knot! So how do we make both sides happy, or is that juggling act even possible?

1. Hamza planned to take Hala to London and facilitate her education

This surprised fans so much that they couldn’t stop gushing over Hamza. Pakistani husbands rarely encourage their young wives to work, let alone continue their education, and that too, abroad. Hamza went a step further by seeking out Hala’s passport, to begin with. Despite the rage many felt over Hamza’s subsequent falling out over the Khurram episode, this intention itself was a jewel in the crown and Hamza’s character set young husband goals for many young men in Pakistan.

2. Hamza planned on giving Hala her own home one day

A joint family system cannot be upset at the behest of the daughter-in-law. But when the son himself aims to give his wife her own home one day, mothers of sons might do a double take. It is perhaps sad, that women in Pakistani society do not want to give their daughters-in-law the freedom to manage their own homes, or the right to choose. The point being, if women have suffered in their time, they feel, the daughter-in-law should too. And if they have not suffered at all, they still want to have their sons by their side. Now, this might not be the case with all mothers-in-law, there are some wonderful human beings out there, so don’t get me wrong, but many ride by the hope that their sons belong to them. That ownership is the crux of all issues (and the leading narrative in many Pakistani dramas) perhaps? And Hamza seemed to be defying that very law, hence Shah Jahan’s subsequent wrath upon Hala, I mean, can you blame her?

3. Hamza encouraged Hala’s efforts in the kitchen and also assisted her to prep a meal for his office colleagues

Where other heroes have often excelled in the chai-making department, Hamza went one step ahead to give us kitchen goals to aspire to. Not only did he appreciate Hala’s cooking but also added miles to the positive image of a young husband helping out in an area that is hugely female-dominated – how’s that for a refreshingly woke role model!

4. Hamza took his wife on a (short-lived) honeymoon, despite his mom’s insistence that they not go

A honeymoon is a time when the newlyweds spend time away from the family shenanigans. It is a dreamy period, it gives a lifetime of treasured memories for most couples who cannot afford the luxury of doing it all over again. It also might be hard for sons to do this if their moms blatantly refuse such a madcap adventure – Honeymoon, ever heard of it? And Hamza’s mom obviously did not approve. But he went anyway. Brownie points to Hamza for that one, though he did turn back the second day, poor chap, what’s a married man to do?

Needless to say, he did it with zero drama and in a matter-of-fact manner that again, set goals for young men. What can we say, balance is the key to relationships, and Hamza was well on his way to achieving that, at least, the intentions were very much well placed, had Shah Jahan and Khurram not put their heads together in evil machinations!

5. Hamza is giving Hala space and allowing her to think things through, away from him, deciding on the future of their relationship. And this, to quote Shakespeare, might be the unkindest cut of all!

What? She’s thinking about her future. And she’s doing it without you? And not living under the same roof as you? All said and done, despite everything we threw at Hamza, his attempt to understand, respect, and wait for Hala’s decision while staying in touch with her, communicating with her, and trying not to overwhelm her was perhaps, so far, the most endearing part of the narrative.

And one that many mothers-in-law and even younger people, might not totally ‘get’.

As I said earlier, Hamza has flipped many times in the course of the storyline. If it is Hala’s journey to become assertive, self-reliant, and more communicative, it is Hamza’s to be more consistent, not fly into a temper and not attempt to shake his mom or slap his wife, yeah, that happened too!

If he can achieve that, he might just take the Pakistani drama hero trophy home! Is that too good to be true?

Hamza might be the new Pakistani drama hero if he can come good on his intentions and also offer a sense of security to his mom that being a good husband does not necessarily mean being a bad son. It is a tall order indeed, but then, marital bliss and the fruits of joint family come at a price – can he do it? Can any man do it? If anyone can, Hamza might be our closest bet! What say you?
