A drama that truly surprised us in many ways. While we were expecting a typical story of a rape victim with the usual plot twists and emotional turns, Case No. 9 had many surprises in store.

Case No. 9
Case Number 9: First Episodes, First Review

The biggest one? It offered a series of guidelines and cautionary lessons through the script — in a non-preachy and subtle way.

Case No. 9 is entertaining, engaging, intriguing, educational, and thought-provoking, packed with powerful performances.

Seher is allegedly raped by her boss Kamran, who invites her to his home under the pretext of a dinner. She assumes his wife Kiran and their colleague Rohit’s family will be there, as was mentioned to her earlier. But when she arrives, no one is home — not even the servants. When she tries to leave, Kamran stops her.

Kamran is unlike your typical villain. He’s manipulative and lacks conscience, yet he’s seemingly not arrogant or threatening — which sets him apart from the usual negative characters we see in dramas.

The police register an FIR, which comes as a pleasant surprise since we expected Seher to face obstacles here. Kamran, upon learning about the FIR, goes to the police himself, gives his statement, and even gets himself medically tested — leaving us confused about his unexpected cooperation.

His wife Kiran is pregnant and about to give birth.
Rohit, Kamran’s best friend, adds another intriguing layer — he’s furious with Kamran for what he did to Seher but still covers up for him in front of Kiran and stays by his side.
Will Rohit testify against Kamran in court or save him? That question keeps us hooked.

The promos had suggested a very different scenario. The first episode didn’t match that setup, so we’re now wondering: are we in for more surprises, or was that merely a marketing gimmick?

The drama emphasised the following many times:

1: What to do in case of an unfortunate incident like this – How the examination must be carried out immediately before taking a shower, and why the survivor must save as evidence, and also not wash, the clothes she was wearing at the time.

2: What procedure to follow, the medical test at a government hospital, the FIR and then the option of allocation of an official lawyer from the government.

3: The drama also shows multiple characters repeatedly stating that Seher will not win this case in a very subtle yet noticeable manner. We wonder why?

Then there are moments in the screenplay that also make you question what the story really is:

Why did Rohit take so long to reach Kamran’s house? The clock showed 12:15 a.m., and Seher must have arrived by 10:00 p.m. at the latest.

Why did Rohit’s wife’s laptop screen repeatedly display text about domestic violence?

Does Rohit belonging to the Hindu faith hold any legal or symbolic significance, or is it simply normalizing diversity in dramas?

The drama also reflects the harsh reality faced by rape survivors in our society — the skepticism they are subjected to by the police, the medical procedures they undergo, and most importantly, judgment from their own families.

The incident is shown twice with slightly varied details, leaving viewers questioning what really happened.
Kamran held Seher from behind — does that imply the assault occurred that way? His shirt wasn’t dishevelled, and his face bore no scratches — which should have happened if the assault was from the front.
The dripping tap and water spilt on the floor suggest a struggle. These small details raise questions and keep the mystery alive.

Although the drama handles the subject well, we still wonder:
Is it really that easy to get an FIR registered for rape?
In reality, the police often question how a woman can prove it wasn’t consensual. The drama could have included a few lines to clarify this process.

Case No. 9 is a visual treat — excellent cinematography, smart direction, and strong performances make it stand out.
The script and direction are tight and well-paced, with no major loopholes.
Wajahat Hussain and Faysal Quraishi push boundaries — the scene where Faysal takes a blood test may seem minor, but it adds a touch of realism.

A brave, intelligent, and meaningful drama that blends social awareness with powerful storytelling.
