This article is an excerpt from the YouTube interview!

Emmad Irfani On Getting Jami In Kafeel: The Story Behind The Role

Emmad Irfani got the opportunity to play Jami in Kafeel through Fahad Mustafa, who approached him with the project. Fahad, while in Lahore, shared that it was a premium script by Umair Ahmed for a primetime ARY show, and he thought Emmad would be perfect for the role. Emmad received the character sketch first, which gave him a sense of the challenge ahead, and after reading the full script and discussing it with director Meesam Naqvi, he felt inspired to take it on. He also appreciated the chance to work alongside Sanam Saeed, an actor he had admired since the early days of her career.

Working with Meesam was another motivating factor for Emmad. Meesam, being a theatre-trained actor himself, understood how to guide performers and create a sensitive, organic environment on set. He closely oversaw the scenes, providing the foundation while allowing the actors to explore and improvise within it. Emmad noted that working with Sanam elevated his own performance, as they would collaborate on scenes to make them feel natural and engaging. Overall, the combination of a strong script, a respected director, and talented co-stars convinced him that Kafeel was a project worth committing to.

Emmad Irfani On The Responsibility Of Actors & The Social Messages In Kafeel

Emmad Irfani believes that actors do have a responsibility to portray their characters convincingly because the stories they tell can influence audiences. While entertainment is a key part of storytelling, he also thinks that many stories carry an educational or thought-provoking message, whether consciously or not. He shared that literature, films, and writers like Mr. Manto have shaped his own perspective, and as an actor, portraying different facets of human behavior is both a duty and a responsibility.

In Kafeel, Emmad points out that the script addresses several societal taboos in Pakistan, particularly emotional abuse within marriages. He highlights how the show portrays women being treated unfairly – like doormats or subordinates – reflecting real-life gaslighting and manipulation. By portraying these issues authentically, he feels actors can spark reflection and conversation while still delivering an engaging performance.

Emmad Irfani On Trusting Allah & Personal Faith

Emmad Irfani believes that everyone has a unique, personal connection with God, one that evolves over time. For him, this connection has grown through his childhood, teenage years, 20s, 30s, and now into his 40s. He feels that there is a higher presence looking out for him and that God has been kind throughout his journey. Emmad also emphasizes the importance of personal effort, reflecting on the saying that “Allah helps those who help themselves” – acknowledging that while faith is essential, one must also take action in the world.
