Europe is witnessing one of its worst wildfire seasons in recent memory, with France and Spain battling massive blazes that have forced more than 250,000 people from their homes. Entire towns have been evacuated, military aircraft have joined firefighting efforts, and leaders in both countries are warning that the crisis is far from over as soaring temperatures and strong winds continue to fuel the flames.

Where are the wildfires happening?
The biggest fires are burning across southwestern France and central Spain.
In France, the worst-hit areas are the Gironde and Landes regions, with flames spreading dangerously close to Bordeaux, one of the country’s largest cities and a major tourist destination. Entire communities around the famous Cap Ferret peninsula and several suburbs west of Bordeaux have been evacuated as smoke blankets the region.
Spain is battling multiple fires near Madrid, particularly in the Madrid and Ávila regions. Several separate blazes merged into one larger wildfire, making it much harder for firefighters to contain. Another wildfire near Valencia claimed the life of a man after he became trapped in the affected area.
Wildfires have also broken out elsewhere across Europe, including Sicily in Italy and Scotland’s Cairngorms National Park, highlighting just how widespread this year’s fire season has become.
How did the fires become so severe?
Authorities say the fires have been driven by a dangerous combination of prolonged heat, drought and powerful winds.
Many parts of southern Europe have endured repeated heatwaves over recent months, leaving forests and vegetation extremely dry. Once the fires ignited, strong and unpredictable winds allowed them to spread rapidly across large areas, with some separate blazes eventually merging into much larger fire fronts.
Experts have also pointed to increasingly extreme weather linked to climate change, which has lengthened Europe’s wildfire season and created conditions where fires ignite more easily and burn far more intensely than before.
Thousands evacuated as rescue efforts continue
The scale of evacuations has been unprecedented. Nearly 200,000 people have been evacuated across southwestern France, while about 70,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Spain. Tens of thousands more have been instructed to remain indoors because of heavy smoke and dangerous air quality.
Holidaymakers, residents and campers have all been caught in the emergency. Along France’s Atlantic coast, boats helped evacuate people from the Cap Ferret peninsula while traffic stretched for miles as others fled by road. Emergency shelters have been opened to house displaced families, many of whom arrived with pets after leaving their homes with only essential belongings.
Rescue teams continue to move vulnerable residents from high-risk areas as firefighters work around the clock to stop the flames from reaching more communities.
France and Spain step up emergency response
Both governments have launched massive emergency operations to contain the crisis.
France has deployed around 1,500 military personnel to support firefighters, assist evacuations and provide transport, medical aid and logistics. The army has also supplied helicopters, drones, bulldozers and an Airbus A400M military aircraft capable of dropping large amounts of water and fire retardant over the flames. President Emmanuel Macron has appealed for European assistance, with several countries sending firefighting aircraft, helicopters and specialist crews to reinforce French emergency services. Calling for national unity, Macron thanked firefighters, soldiers and international partners helping battle what officials have described as an unprecedented wildfire emergency.
Spain has declared a national emergency as hundreds of firefighters, military units, helicopters and aircraft continue battling the blazes around Madrid. Authorities say weather conditions briefly improved after temperatures dipped, but changing winds remain a major concern. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has warned that Spain still faces “complex hours” ahead, stressing that protecting lives remains the government’s top priority. While acknowledging a short window of more favourable weather, he cautioned that the direction and strength of the wind could quickly change the situation on the ground.
The battle is far from over
Despite thousands of firefighters and extensive international support, neither country has fully brought the fires under control. Large parts of southwestern France remain at risk, while Spanish authorities continue monitoring several active fire zones around Madrid. Weather forecasts suggest only limited rainfall in the affected regions, with another spell of intense heat expected next week.
For now, emergency crews remain focused on protecting lives, containing the advancing flames and preventing Europe’s already devastating wildfire season from becoming even worse.
