At least 163 people have died in Bangladesh during clashes between student protesters, government supporters, and police. The protests began over a controversial job quota system that reserves 30 percent of government jobs for families of veterans from the 1971 Independence War.

The unrest has led to significant violence, with riot police using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse crowds. In Rangpur, police fired on protesters, resulting in one confirmed death. In Chittagong, three individuals with bullet injuries were confirmed dead. Additionally, two people were killed in Dhaka, bringing the total death toll to six. Injuries have been widespread, with over 100 people hurt in various clashes across the country.

Background And Causes Of The Protests

The root cause of the protests lies in the high unemployment rates among young people in Bangladesh, who argue that the job quota system is unfair. Currently, 56 percent of government jobs are reserved for specific groups, including 30 percent for veterans’ families, 10 percent for women, 10 percent for individuals from underdeveloped districts, 5 percent for Indigenous communities, and 1 percent for people with disabilities. Despite increasing opportunities in the private sector, many young people seek stable and lucrative government jobs, making the competition for these positions extremely fierce.

These protests represent the first major challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government since her re-election for a fourth term in January. In response to the unrest, riot police have been deployed across university campuses, and the paramilitary Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) force has been sent to five major cities, including Dhaka and Chittagong, in an effort to maintain order.

The protests intensified after a High Court order reinstated the quotas for veterans’ families, a decision that angered students and led to the current demonstrations. In response, the Supreme Court has temporarily halted the High Court’s order for four weeks and urged students to return to classes while the case is reviewed.

International attention has been drawn to the government’s handling of the protests, with organizations like the United Nations and Amnesty International calling for the protection of peaceful demonstrators. Prime Minister Hasina has defended the quotas, emphasizing the sacrifices made by war veterans during the 1971 Independence War.

In light of the ongoing violence, the Education Ministry has announced an indefinite closure of all schools and universities across the country. Prime Minister Hasina has also promised to set up a judicial panel to investigate the deaths and injuries resulting from the clashes. A Supreme Court hearing is scheduled for August 7 to decide the future of the controversial quota system.

The student protesters, frustrated by high unemployment rates and what they see as an unfair job allocation system, are calling for a complete nationwide shutdown, allowing only hospitals and emergency services to remain operational. The situation remains tense, with both sides standing firm on their positions, and the upcoming judicial review expected to play a crucial role in determining the future of the protests.
