Tan’s real name is Tanveer Wasim and he was born to Muslim-Pakistani parents in Doncaster. He flaunts his brown-ness and is definitely not afraid of making a statement.
Time and again, we’ve seen Tan claim, “style is not fashion”, emphasizing the fact that there is more to it than just expensive pieces of clothing.
Roll Up
Nothing uplifts a dull outfit like rolled up sleeves. Even on casual days, don’t be afraid to look good. “It will show that you’ve put some thought into your look”, says Tan in episode 1.
“As a stylist, my goal is to help people be the best version of themselves”.
Casual Formals
Regarding his go-to outfits, Tan in an interview claimed that he would much rather pair up his suit with a sweater or t-shirt rather than an actual button down. It makes the ensemble look classier while also dulling down the ceremonial touch of the suit.
“If you can’t take care of yourself, how the heck are you going to take care of everyone around you?”.
Layer Up
No one can ever go wrong with layers. Don’t be afraid to layer up. Tan absolutely loves layering up because one, you can transition between seasons with the same clothes and two, they look absolutely great!
“Nobody wants to see an engagement photo with you in your ratty jeans and t-shirt. Go for layers, and you’re always going to look like you made more of an effort”.
Size Your Style
Always, always buy your size. Your outfit makes you go from a 0 to 10 so make sure you buy clothes your size.
Especially your suits, make sure they’re tailored “strong shoulders. Sleeve length to hit the wrist. No more than one break at the ankle” said Tan in an interview with Forbes.
“It doesn’t matter if the item isn’t your favorite thing as long it fits well”.
Don’t Be Afraid Of Color
“People of color pull of color better than anybody” said Tan, dressing up our homecoming king, Hassan Minhaj.
Tan’s particular take on bold prints and popping color is refreshing considering it’s for men.
On sets of Queer Eye Tan chants “I am sending a memo to every man in the world, just because you make an effort with your wardrobe doesn’t make you a wuss”.
In an interview for Bustle, Tan said that there was nothing clothes could do for you if you don’t love and accept the way you are in the first place. “Be kinder to yourself” said Tan. Maybe, that’s where we should begin too, regardless of whether we’re following the “it” trends or not.
