A major avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountain range has led to a tragic mountaineering disaster.
The avalanche struck on Thursday at an altitude of about 6,600 meters between Camp 2 and Camp 3, as 10 climbers were trying to climb to the top of the 8,047-meter peak of the Karakoram mountain range in Gilgit Baltistan. The contact with the climbing team had been lost right after the avalanche hit.
Who Were the Missing Mountaineers?
The expedition was led by famous Nepalese mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja, who gained worldwide recognition due to his achievements in climbing all of the 14 tallest mountains that are more than 8,000 meters above sea level. Apart from Nirmal Purja, the missing group consisted of Sohail Sakhi (climber from Pakistan and photographer from Hunza), Mallory Geis (American mountaineer), a climber from Oman, Mr. Wang (Chinese climber) and five Sherpa mountaineers from Nepal.
Four Bodies Recovered
Following a rigorous search operation, four bodies have been retrieved from the avalanche site. So far, the authorities have not yet confirmed the identity of the bodies that have been recovered since the process is ongoing. There are still six climbers missing, and the possibility of any survivors seems to be dwindling down.
Difficult Rescue Operation
The rescue attempt has been delayed due to the poor weather, deep snow and the threat of more avalanches. Pakistan Army helicopters are on stand-by, although flights have only been able to take place in brief periods when the weather improves. Professional climbers from Pakistan, along with members of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, are helping in the operation.
A Mountain Known for Its Dangers
Broad Peak is ranked 12th among the highest peaks in the world and is known to be one of the most difficult mountains of Pakistan. Whereas thousands of mountaineers visit such northern mountains of Pakistan to climb, yet the sudden occurrence of avalanches, uncertain weather conditions, and high altitude still pose great dangers for such endeavors. All efforts have been made to track down the missing climbers.
