In a neighbourhood where opportunities can often feel as distant as the world beyond it, education can become more than a classroom. It can become a doorway.
For students at Rahnuma Public School (RPS), that doorway has been open for more than two decades. Run by Path Educational Society (PES), the school provides free, quality education to children from Azam Basti, Karachi, a densely populated community situated alongside the affluent neighbourhood of Defence Housing Authority (DHA), yet worlds apart in terms of economic opportunity.
Established in 2004 under the Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860, Path Educational Society is a registered NGO with the Pakistan Centre for Philanthropy (PCP) and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Since its inception, PES has worked to make quality education accessible to children whose financial circumstances might otherwise limit their choices.
Today, Rahnuma Public School provides education from Nursery through Intermediate (HSSC) to more than 550 children. Students have access to qualified teachers, an international curriculum and laptops, all within walking distance of their homes. RPS is also the only school in Pakistan to widely use XO laptops across the school, ensuring that every child from Grade 1 onwards has the opportunity to use technology as part of their learning.
Education is not only about what happens inside the classroom. For a child to learn, concentrate and participate fully in school, their basic needs must also be met. Recognising this, Rahnuma Public School provides students with one meal each day. For children from families where putting a meal on the table every day can itself be a challenge, this provides an important source of nourishment and support. By helping address both educational and nutritional needs, the school aims to create an environment where students can focus on learning and making the most of the opportunities before them.
But the significance of Rahnuma is perhaps best understood through the stories of the students who pass through its classrooms.
One of them is Muhammad Darwesh Khan.
Recognising Potential Beyond the Classroom
Darwesh’s journey at Rahnuma was marked by more than academic progress. His teachers remember him as a student who was curious, hardworking and eager to participate.f
Every year, Rahnuma holds a Talent Week, giving students the opportunity to explore interests and abilities beyond their regular classroom lessons. During the IT Exhibition, students take part in games and Scratch-based activities. Darwesh participated enthusiastically and even won a prize.
It was this combination of curiosity, active participation and consistent academic performance that first made his potential stand out.
The school saw in him a willingness to learn, take on challenges and keep moving forward. They believed that, with the right opportunities and support, he could achieve much more.
That belief would become particularly important when it came time for Darwesh to think about life after school.
Education Does Not End at Graduation
At Path Educational Society, the responsibility towards a student does not end when they leave Rahnuma.
The school recognises that completing school is only one part of an educational journey. For many students, the more difficult question comes afterwards: What happens next?
To help students answer that question, Rahnuma holds a Career Week every year for its graduating classes. Students are introduced to different fields of study, career paths and opportunities for further education. Through the wider network of Path Educational Society, professionals and organisations are invited to interact with students and introduce them to possibilities they may not otherwise encounter.
Organisations such as GEAR Trust have also played a role in introducing students to scholarship opportunities and explaining how they can seek financial support.
The school goes beyond simply telling students that these opportunities exist. It also helps them navigate the application process and prepare the documentation required for scholarships and other forms of funding.
Darwesh consistently demonstrated the determination needed to make the most of those opportunities, and the school was happy to support him along the way.
Looking Beyond the Classroom
For Rahnuma, supporting students means understanding that every child’s circumstances are different.
The school remains connected with its alumni and makes an effort to keep track of their progress after graduation. When financial difficulties threaten to interrupt a student’s education, the team tries to understand the challenge and explore possible solutions.
One example involved two brothers who had graduated from Rahnuma but were unable to continue their FSc education because they could not afford the daily transportation costs to their college. Path Educational Society stepped in to provide financial assistance for their transportation, allowing both students to continue their studies.
This approach reflects a broader belief: financial assistance should not simply be about responding to a crisis. It should be about ensuring that a student’s circumstances do not unnecessarily close the door to an opportunity.
The school also works with organisations such as GEAR Trust to connect deserving students with opportunities that may otherwise remain beyond their reach.
Finding the Right Path for Every Student
Higher education does not look the same for everyone.
Rahnuma believes that every student has the potential to build a better future, but that future does not necessarily have to mean a university degree. Professional qualifications, higher education and vocational training can all provide meaningful opportunities depending on a student’s interests, abilities and ambitions.
Because the school has been part of its students’ formative years, teachers and administrators have an understanding of their academic progress, aspirations and family circumstances.
They try to understand not only what a student wants to pursue, but why.
When financial circumstances are likely to become a barrier, the school looks at what support may be available through Path Educational Society, its partners and its wider network.
This guidance begins long before graduation. Through Career Week, field trips and exposure to different environments outside the classroom, students are encouraged to broaden their understanding of what is possible and make more informed decisions about their futures.
More Than Financial Support
For students worried that their financial circumstances may prevent them from continuing their education, Rahnuma’s message is simple: where there is a will, there is a way.
The school knows that determination cannot solve every financial obstacle on its own. But it also knows that a student’s willingness to learn and persevere matters.
The students at Rahnuma have already worked hard to receive a quality education. The hope is that financial circumstances should not automatically bring that journey to an end.
Instead, the school tries to help students identify available opportunities, connect with organisations and find a way forward.
A School Built Around Opportunity
The scale of Rahnuma’s work becomes clearer when looking at how students enter the school in the first place.
Each year, only 50 Nursery students are admitted, despite receiving more than 100 applications. To qualify, children must come from families with a household income of PKR 30,000 or below. Just as importantly, families must demonstrate a genuine commitment to their children’s education.
The growing student population is, in many ways, a reflection of the school’s impact within the community.
More than 550 children now have access to an education that includes technology, qualified teachers and an international curriculum. For children growing up in a community where financial hardship can restrict opportunities, having those resources within walking distance of home can make a significant difference.
And the goal is not simply to get children into classrooms.
It is to help them imagine what could come after.
What Darwesh’s Story Means
For the teachers and administration who watched Darwesh grow from a student participating enthusiastically in an IT Exhibition into a young person pursuing higher education, his success is a source of pride.
But his journey also represents something bigger.
It reflects the perseverance of his family in supporting his education. It reflects Darwesh’s own determination to keep learning and pursuing his goals. And it reflects the commitment of Path Educational Society and Rahnuma Public School to ensuring that quality education does not end with a school certificate.
Darwesh’s story is ultimately a reminder that circumstances do not have to define a person’s future.
A student may begin with limited resources, but when determination meets education, mentorship and access to opportunity, the possibilities can become much greater.
For Rahnuma, that is the real measure of success: not simply how many children graduate, but how many leave believing that they can build something beyond the circumstances they were born into.
And perhaps that is the most important lesson Darwesh’s journey can offer to the students who come after him.
