GOT maybe the show that may as well define a generation. This is the game that has gripped millions of people across the globe. It started with a bang, the last episode of the first season pretty much sums up the show, no one is safe. And we have finally reached the conclusion – Game of Thrones Season 8! Now to put a disclaimer, this is just my opinion, you are free to agree or disagree.
I think HBO made the right decision of making a short GOT season – only 8 episodes, but each episode will be like a mini movie. The question is: What can we expect? Who will finally win? For Winter has truly arrived in Westeros.
Ice, Ice Baby
There is so much happening by the end of season 7. The Wall no longer exists and the Night King marches with his army and has an ice-breathing dragon to boot. This is the true threat to the whole kingdom and judging by what we’ve seen from the GOT promos of season 8, looks like that’s where the party is going to be.
Will Fire Triumph Over Ice?
Sticking to the North, we need to talk about Daenerys and Jon Snow. The final revelation, which was the worst kept secret of the show, proves that Jon Snow is no bastard but the true heir to the throne. But I want to discuss Daenerys in more detail. My concern with her as a character is that she depends on brute strength; her dragons, the Dothraki and the Unsullied. Every army she has come across has been left in ashes BUT the army of the dead will be no easy foe as we have already seen them take out one of her dragons. Also, the plot conveniently leaves just one dragon for Jon Snow, where initially, rumour had it that there Tyrion would be the 3rd dragon rider – clearly, that isn’t happening.
Starks: United We Stand
The Starks are back in Winterfell. Bran is making his trips into the past, the future, and lives somewhere in between. The over-riding theory is that he is the Night King. I don’t think so; I think he will play a big part in trying to defeat the army. The Stark girls have grown so much throughout the series, I love Sansa; she started off as such a demure, passive character and now she knows her worth. She has been through hell and back married to Ramsay and is exacting revenge on all that mean to harm her family. Something that stood out for me in the promos is the scene with Jon, Sansa and Arya in the Crypts staring at the statues of themselves. Another scene that stood out – when Arya was running with fear. Arya is one of the most fearless characters in the Game, so to watch her running scared plays upon how intense this season is going to be. It will also be interesting to see their interaction with Daenerys because there will be distrust amongst all of them, I am sure.
Can’t Money Just Buy Absolute Power?
Cersei, I think, has gone a bit mad, so much so that Jaime has given up on her. Realizing that the real danger lies to the north, he finally comes to his senses and wants to fight for the living. Cersei only wants to consolidate power and I have a sneaking suspicion that Tyrion has played a hand with her and cannot be trusted. But Cersei is one of the smartest players of the Game. As she has rightly said that: “Things would have been different if I were a man”. The way she has handled every threat that has come her way shows her level of intelligence and prowess at manipulating people to get what she wants.
These are merely some of the major factors in play in GOT. In truth, very little has been given away and we hardly know much about the GOT Season 8. One snippet is that Cersei seems to have employed the Golden Company (an assumption based off the trailer). I truly believe that the War will be in the North alone. Cersei may march and come across the Night King’s army. The BIG question remains unanswered: Who will win? Jon Snow is almost confirmed as Azor Ahai; the prophesized warrior, I see very little chances of it being someone else. I do think he will die, most likely sacrificing himself for the greater good because that’s such a Jon Snow move. It’s going to be a three-way battle between the Night King, Daenerys and Cersei.
There are so many predictions and theories at large that anything could be possible. The Game of Thrones has continued to surprise us with numerous twists and turns so who knows. All we know as an audience awaiting the final season with bated breath – that we expect an epic conclusion to an epic series!
