Resident Evil is in a sense, a true pioneer of the survival horror genre when it comes to games. It wasn’t the first of its kind however, it did pave the way for similar games to follow suit because of its immense success.

Let’s dig into its origin, the inspiration behind the game, and some fun tidbits about it! Keep reading to find 8 interesting facts about Resident Evil before catching Ahad Raza Mir on the Netflix show this July!

1. It Wasn’t Always Called Resident Evil

Resident Evil was called ‘BioHazard’ (without space) when it was first released in Japan, and then Bio Hazard (with space) for its further installments. However, it was decided to rename the game Resident Evil when it had to be released in the United States. Why, you ask? Keep scrolling for the answer!

2. Impossible To Trademark

When the game came to the United States, Capcom found itself in a bit of a pickle! The name ‘BioHazard’ was already claimed by two existing brands in the US. Hence, they had to resort to renaming the game and they did so in a rather amusing way.

3. How The Name Was Chosen

The name ‘Resident Evil’ was chosen in a contest! Capcom held a contest in the company where people had to come up with a new name for the game. Eventually, Resident Evil came out as a clear winner because of the game’s “mansion setting.”

4. Mansions Used In The Game Are Real-Life Inspired

This one is giving us the creeps! The mansions used in the game were inspired from real-world houses as they creeped out the creators the most and they felt the game needed a “strong background” and also to stay true to its genre.

5. Planned To Be A Remake Of Another Game Initially

Capcom’s 1989 game Sweet Home was initially used as a reference when Resident Evil was merely an idea. It was decided that it would be a remake of Sweet Home, however, this idea didn’t see the light of day. However, significant chunks of the game such as multiple endings, mansion setting, survival gameplay, and puzzles are taken from Sweet Home.

6. Majorly Inspired By The Shining

Can you sense there’s a theme going? 1980’s classic horror film, The Shining, was used as an inspiration for the game. The eerie wallpapers, the mansion’s design, and even the colors. The zombie film genre was another reference point when the game was being developed.

7. Became A Best-Seller In Its First Year Of Release!

Although the makers didn’t have much hope, in its first year of release, it sold 2.75 million copies on the Original PlayStation. The unprecedented sales made Resident Evil one of the most triumphant games on PlayStation.

8. A Guinness World Record For “World’s Worst Dialogue”

Resident Evil has set all sorts of great records but…not this one! The game was added to the Gamer’s Edition of Guinness World Record for “Worst Game Dialogue Ever.” Yikes! Don’t know what to feel about that? Neither do we!

If you made it to the end, you can now call yourself pretty well-versed when it comes to Resident Evil. You’re all set to fangirl/fanboy over Ahad Raza Mir this July yet at the same time, understand the plot of the show.
