Her journey began with a series of notable roles that showcased her talent and range. Yamin first gained recognition with her role in the drama serial Bholi Bano. Hajra Yamin currently has audiences deeply invested in her performance as Sumbul in Pakistani drama Noor Jahan. Hajra Yamin Discusses The Challenges Of Playing Sumbul

Hajra said that playing Sumbul was not easy because the character was very different from her. Before portraying Sumbul, she used to judge girls like her. She mentioned that after playing Sumbul, she realized that the character has a complete arc and a full circle. Hajra expressed regret for judging people like Sumbul before.

Regarding her collaboration with Musaddik Malek, Hajra shared that he was like a fairy godmother on set. She worked closely with him, seeking his guidance before each scene. She even received a scolding from him, which, she agrees, was part of the learning process.

Hajra explained that they worked on Sumbul’s character together, discussing details like her appearance and body language. She mentioned that her stylist helped create Sumbul’s look, including her clothes, jewelry, and overall style. Hajra added that Sumbul’s hairstyle and makeup were crucial in defining the character. The team made sure that Sumbul’s appearance reflected her role as Noor Jahan’s puppet, with every detail being controlled and rehearsed.

Does Sumbul Resemble Hajra? Not Quite!

Hajra shared that Sumbul’s character is very different from her real personality, describing them as poles apart. She admitted that Sumbul’s choices and actions could be frustrating for viewers, making them feel justified in their anger toward her character. While Sumbul’s behavior can be infuriating, Hajra explained that it stems from her desire to please others, like Safeer and Noor Jahan. Sumbul has lost her true self in this pursuit, becoming just a face and body with no real identity left.

Hajra mentioned that Sumbul’s experience mirrors that of many women who sacrifice their identities to fit into certain roles. Despite the challenges, Hajra sees Sumbul’s character as relatable, especially for women who feel trapped in unwanted relationships or second-wife situations. She explained that she had to disconnect her personal perspective from Sumbul’s portrayal to accurately reflect the character’s reality. Even when scenes felt degrading, Hajra committed to staying true to Sumbul’s narrative, trusting the direction and the vision of the director, Musaddik Malek.

Hajra also touched upon how Sumbul feels cornered by everyone around her, especially Noor Jahan, who only engages with her when it’s convenient. This feeling of being an outsider or not belonging is something many viewers can relate to, according to Hajra. Despite the initial struggles, Hajra is hopeful for Sumbul’s future development, hinting at a possible transformation that could bring new dimensions to her character.

Sumbul’s Reality And Hajra’s Take On Women’s Challenges

Hajra shares a heartfelt perspective on how Sumbul’s character, unlike her own, struggles in her fictional world. For Sumbul, there are no real strengths or support systems like Noor Bano or Safina possess. This absence makes her journey seem almost unrealistic. Hajra believes this mirrors the reality for many women in similar situations. Despite enduring toxic environments, they remain because they have shelter and food, and fear starting over.

Hajra expresses frustration towards societal norms that confine women to abusive and unbearable situations. She acknowledges that while leaving is challenging, it’s necessary for their well-being. She urges women to break free and discover the freedom waiting outside those chains. Understanding generational trauma is essential to realize why many women stay, but Hajra believes the solutions lie in women supporting each other. She emphasizes the importance of empowering women to step out of their comfort zones, face the unknown, and find freedom and fulfillment.

Financial Independence: Hajra’s Crucial Advice For Women

Hajra passionately emphasizes the importance of financial independence, especially for married women, urging them to secure their own savings. She questions why women can’t have personal accounts despite being married, advocating for their financial autonomy. Hajra highlights that, in some cases, women work but their salaries are directed into their husbands’ accounts. This, she argues, strips women of their financial control and independence, which is vital for making personal decisions.

Hajra believes financial stability provides the strength to stand by one’s choices, outweighing even the security offered by relationships. However, she acknowledges that mental conditioning also plays a crucial role, and without it, financial independence alone might not lead to freedom. She urges women to be vocal about their problems because seeking help might bring unexpected support from the universe. In her experience, when blood relations don’t offer support, strangers often become the family you choose, and one decisive step can change everything.

Hajra Clarifies Feminism And Highlights The Need For Genuine Activism

Hajra emphasizes that feminism is fundamentally about gender equality, dismissing misconceptions that it’s an evil or radical ideology. She encourages people to simply Google the definition of feminism to understand its true meaning, advocating for equal rights at the grassroots level. Hajra points out the importance of focusing on real issues, such as the peak in various cases of injustice currently happening. She believes people must be flexible with their opinions, as rigid beliefs can add fuel to the fire.

Hajra also feels that movements like the Aurat March represent women who face harsher challenges than those from more privileged backgrounds. She recalls how women from different cities, like Faisalabad and Sukkur, traveled to participate in the Aurat March, highlighting its importance for marginalized communities. However, Hajra criticizes the media for failing to cover these crucial stories, instead focusing on less meaningful aspects. She calls for transparency in conversations, as she believes many activists lack depth in their understanding and sometimes misuse their platform.

She admires activists like Fatima Bhutto, who initiate transparent communication, especially on serious topics like the situation in Gaza or minority rights in Pakistan. Hajra recognizes the importance of activism but also warns against the risks of hijacking these movements by those who lack knowledge. She expresses concern over current activism trends, which sometimes shift focus away from pressing issues like the abuse of young girls or the persecution of minorities. Despite this, Hajra sees a positive side: more people are talking about these topics now, even if some conversations are misguided.

It was great talking to Hajra and hearing her views. Stay tuned for the full interview, coming soon on FUCHSIA’s YouTube channel.
