What Is Joyland About?
“It is a family drama. Agar story wise dekha jaye yeh aik larkay ki kahani hai jo kay aik do different worlds kay andar exist kar raha hai.Aik humara regular family conservative jo hum sab ka hota hai jis tarhan say aik household jismein buhat saray members unki apni kahani hai. Or aik theatre world jo aik punjabi mujra theatre world hai jahan wo Biba say miltay hein. There is a very weird dichotomy between the two, there is a stark difference kay wo apnay ghar say kya emotion lekay jaraha hai or us theatre say kya lekay araha hai. That act sort of becomes the change creator for the whole family, for good and for bad. Its also about patriarchy for sure.”

Saim sheds light on the plot of the film, surrounding the character of Ali Junejo’s dual life. He also shared that the film is about patriarchy.
Rasti Farooq On Her Character As Mumtaz
“Mumtaz jaisay hai wo kaam karti hai, usko apnay kaam say buhat dilchaspi hai, wo buhat achi hai apnay kaam mein. She works at a parlour, shes very competent and you see her working at the parlour. She’s fun, she’s likeable, she’s quick on her feet. Any character who is good at something aik dum say you are drawn to them. Meray liye jo dosri interesting cheez is film kay andar thi wo yeh hai kay uska jo taluq hai apnay shohar kay sath wo aik different kind ka hai. Yes wo traditional family say belong kartay hein and unki soch bhi traditional hai but aapas mein unhon nay aik aisa relationship banaya hua hai kay aik dosray ko buhat pyaar bhi kartay hein, understanding bhi hai, aik dosray ko apni zindagi apnay terms pay jeenay detay hein but they also have each others back”

Upon asking about the character of Mumtaz, Rasti explained that her character is very likeable however the more interesting part of her character is her relationship dynamic with her husband.
How Will Joyland Open Opportunities For The Trans Community?
“Mujhay lagta hai jab yeh Pakistan mein chalaygi, jab log humaray struggle ko dekheingay ya humara kaam logon kay samney ayega tou logon ko kaafi hud tak yeh awareness hogi kay agar hum trans bhi hein tou kisi say kaam nahi hein. Hum wo har cheez karsaktay hein jo aik mard ya aurat karti hai. Or mujhay lagta hai jo new youth hai jo mujhay dekheygi tou unmein hosla built hoga, unko pata hoga kay agar humara gender yeh hai tou hum issay hatkay bhi zindagi mein buhat kuch karsaktay hein”
Alina Khan
Alina explained how Joyland will illuminate the path of awareness amongst people that being trans does not mean that a person cannot do things that a male or female can do.
Does Joyland Touch Taboo Topics?
“No, agar aapko lagta hai kay aik khuawaja sira hona taboo topic hai tou phir mein is baray mein kuch nahi kehsakta because wo khuwaja sira aapko sarkon pay bhi mil rahay hein, aapko har jaga nazar arahay hein or aapko kabhi issue nahi hua jab tak filmon pay ya tv mein ya comedy shows mein unka mazak uraya jaraha tha. Kisi ko masla nahi tha kay khuwaja sira kyun hein ya yeh banda feminine kyun bangaya hai as long as you’re making fun of it. The second that you humanize it and you say kay hum wohi kar rahay hein lekin unka mazaak nahi ura rahay pehli dafa. So aapko masla unki representation say nahi hai sirf unki representation aik human tareeqay say karney mein hai tou yeh aapka masla hai”

Saim shared that the trans community representation should not be a taboo topic. People usually don’t have a problem when they are being made fun of then they shouldn’t have a problem when you humanize the trans community.
