I’ve always been the kind of person who reaches for a mystery series over a love story, every single time. There’s just something about twisting plots, hidden clues, and those “wait, what just happened?!” moments that keep me glued to the screen. While rom-coms and dramas have their charm, nothing gets my heart racing quite like trying to piece together a puzzle before the characters do. In my quest to find the best of the best, I dove into the world of South Indian thrillers – and let me tell you, the creativity and suspense here are next level.

If You Think You’re Smart Enough To Decode The Plot Twist, Watch These 5 South Indian Mystery Thrillers

In my search, I discovered a handful of movies that aren’t just entertaining – they make you think, question everything, and occasionally gasp out loud. Each one has its own unique twist, keeping you guessing until the very last frame. If you’re like me and love a good mental challenge wrapped in cinematic storytelling, then these 5 South Indian mystery thrillers are exactly what you need next on your watchlist. Trust me, once you start, you won’t want to stop!

1. Ratsasan

Ratsasan opens with the discovery of a brutal murder — a 15‑year‑old schoolgirl found dead under mysterious and gruesome circumstances. Arun Kumar, a young man who actually wanted to be a filmmaker and has spent years obsessing over serial killers, ends up joining the Tamil Nadu police as a sub‑inspector due to family pressure. Shortly after he joins, a new murder happens that bears eerie similarities to the first, and Arun is the only one who spots the pattern. What starts as one strange case quickly becomes clear: a serial killer is stalking schoolgirls, and Arun’s research into psychopaths suddenly becomes incredibly relevant.

As the story unfolds, every lead Arun follows seems to take him closer to the truth — but just when you think you know who the killer is, the movie flips the script. The suspects, the motives, the red herrings — they all play with your mind, making you question everything you’ve assumed. By the time the climax arrives, you’re left guessing, gasping, and thinking, “Wait… the person I suspected all along wasn’t the killer at all!” Ratsasan isn’t just a thriller; it’s a masterclass in suspense that keeps you second-guessing until the very last moment.

2. Por Thozhil

The story of Por Thozhil kicks off when a young woman’s brutal murder in the woods shakes up the police in Tiruchirappalli. DSP trainee Prakash, fresh and eager, is sent along with seasoned officer Loganathan and tech expert Veena to find out what’s going on. What seems like one isolated incident quickly turns into something much darker — one murder becomes two, then three, all with the same strange and methodical pattern. The team realises they’re not chasing a random criminal, but someone cold, calculating, and terrifyingly consistent.

As the investigation deepens, the film slowly peels back layers of character, tension, and the scars that trauma can leave behind. Prakash’s insecurities, Loganathan’s gruff wisdom, and even the fleeting glimpses of suspects all make you wonder how much someone’s past shapes who they become — and whether the killer’s own history might hold the key to this mystery. Just when you start to think you know who could be behind these gruesome acts and why, the story flips your assumptions on their head and pulls you back into the hunt. Por Thozhil keeps you guessing, building a chilling psychological puzzle that stays with you long after it’s over.

3. Anjaam Pathira

The movie begins with a chilling mystery: police officers in Kochi are being found dead under bizarre and gruesome circumstances, each crime more disturbing than the last. With the city on edge, the police call in Dr. Anwar Hussain, a psychologist who consults with law enforcement to help them make sense of the brutality and strange forensic clues left behind. Soon, Anwar finds himself deep in an investigation that’s anything but straightforward — there’s hacking, cryptic symbols at crime scenes, and a strange pattern that hints the killer is always one step ahead.

As the stakes rise, the team scrambles to connect leads and uncover motives, but every new twist keeps you guessing. The more Anwar digs into timelines, tech clues, and psychological angles, the more complex the case becomes — and every suspect you start to consider gets thrown into doubt again. By the time the story reaches its peak, you’re left thinking, “Was it the obvious suspect all along? Or someone no one could have guessed?”, because Anjaam Pathira masterfully keeps the real truth just out of reach until the very end.

4. Anweshippin Kandethum

The story of Anweshippin Kandethum follows SI Anand Narayanan, a dedicated and honest police officer who finds himself pulled back into the world of crime investigation after being wrongly suspended while chasing answers in an earlier case. When a young woman’s disappearance and murder resurfaces as a cold case, Anand takes up the challenge again — this time leading a team through tangled clues, village politics, and hidden truths that refuse to stay buried. From the outset, the film paints a picture of a seasoned cop who won’t give up easily, even when the odds and the community seem stacked against him.

As suspects emerge, hidden agendas and political pressures cloud the investigation, and past mistakes come back to haunt Anand, you start to question every lead and every character’s motive. Just when you think you’ve figured out who might be responsible — someone shady in the village, someone with a grudge, maybe even someone closer to the police than you’d expect — the story smartly pulls the rug out from under your assumptions. It keeps you guessing long after the final reveal, making you wonder “Was it really who I suspected all along, or something much more unexpected?”

5. Maharaja

Maharaja follows a seemingly simple man — a barber in Chennai whose life revolves around his day job and his beloved daughter, Jyori. Their unique bond has an unusual symbol: a battered old dustbin they affectionately call Lakshmi, a reminder of how Jothi survived a tragic accident that took her mother’s life. One day, when Lakshmi goes missing, Maharaja shows up at the local police station determined to get it back, only to find himself dismissed and mocked by officers who think it’s a ridiculous complaint. His stubborn insistence refuses to let the matter drop, and soon that small incident makes way for something much darker and more urgent.

As the police begin to investigate, strange things start to emerge — threads that connect back to a violent past and a horrifying crime that few would suspect. Maharaja’s own account, mixed with surprising clues and unexpected revelations, makes you second‑guess every assumption: Is this man really chasing a dustbin? Or is there something far more chilling beneath the surface? With each twist, the movie refuses to let you settle on one explanation, keeping you guessing right up to the end. Was the truth hiding in plain sight all along? Or was it something no one saw coming?
