After dealing with joint family issues and the challenges of the initial days of marriage, this week, Jama Taqseem highlights the topic of cousin marriages. Is Qais an accurate portrayal of men who, despite being somewhat progressive, struggle to control their anger and end up misbehaving? The slap from Qais’s mother shocked all of us.

Shafaq and Faisal, the two young characters in the drama stand out this week. Faisal finally refuses to marry Shafaq and questions his mother on why she is comfortable with Sidra marrying Zeeshan, who harassed her. This was a very important point to address. In our society, the solution to harassment or molestation is often to marry the victim to the perpetrator simply because she is considered “tainted” and supposedly unacceptable to anyone else. Yet this is the greatest injustice that can be done to any girl.
Shafaq’s understanding of the consequences of cousin marriage, and her attempt to explain to her mother why she is not ready for marriage, was another very strong moment in the drama. Nighat, being Nighat, completely dismissed her concerns and emotionally pressured her to marry just for her own peace of mind.
Last week it was Rashida, the epitome of selfishness. This week, it is Nighat. She selfishly convinces Shafaq to marry Faisal, refusing to listen to anything Shafaq was trying to say. Nighat knows that if the truth about Zeeshan comes out, no one will agree to marry him or even Shafaq, simply because she is his sister. By rushing these marriages with Sidra and Faisal, she is ensuring that she appears to be the bigger person, while also shielding her own children from future backlash.
Poor Qais, the slap was harsh and caught not only him, but everyone, off guard. The drama beautifully revealed how Laila has been the one financially supporting the house. That entire scene deserves applause. It was thoroughly entertaining to watch while waiting for the major revelations to unfold.
The two sets of parents are now beginning to respect and understand each other, accepting the differences in their perspectives. It has been a heartwarming journey, and the viewers were made to feel part of it.
The drama also emphasizes that a lack of formal education does not make someone ignorant (jahil). There is a difference between being old-school/traditional and being uneducated. Doing things differently does not automatically make someone jahil. Qais’s parents may not be as educated or expressive as Laila’s parents, but they are not ignorant, they simply have a different thought process, one that we are now seeing evolve rapidly.
At the same time, the drama shows Hameed recalling how his father and brothers always stood by him in difficult times. Now that he is alone, with no one to share his struggles with, he is finally realizing the value of family support.
Hopefully, the storyline moves toward showing a balanced middle ground between a joint family system and independent living.
