As if the ongoing political shenanigans weren’t enough, the chaos has now traveled to the UK, outside former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ex-wife, Jemima Goldsmith’s house, to be specific.
Earlier today, Jemima posted a distasteful poster of an organised protest outside her house for 17th April, which also revealed her home address. Expressing her dismay, she wrote “Protests outside my house, targeting my children, antisemitic abuse on social media…. It’s almost like I’m back in 90s Lahore. #PuranaPakistan.”
These groups have resorted to attacking former premier’s children and ex-wife who do not have any involvement in Pakistani politics whatsoever. On top of that, making personal remarks regarding someone’s religion, making antisemitic remarks have exacerbated the situation. Perhaps, this misdirected frustration should stay in Pakistan, rather, should be limited to Imran Khan.
Pakistanis are pouring in support for Jemima, tweeting messages of comfort and apologies on behalf of the people of Pakistan. It’s saddening, to say the least.
“Absolutely disgusting. Sorry @Jemima_Khan, they aren’t representing us. They should go & protest outside Bani Gala. They won’t achieve anything from protesting outside a woman house.”
“This is horrifying. Stay strong @Jemima_Khan. All the graceful Pakistanis stand with you.”
“I am truly sorry for my country’s stupid people though I know it’s not gonna help. Please stay safe.”
Back Story
On 10th April, Imran Khan was ousted as the Prime Minister of Pakistan via a no-confidence motion submitted by the then opposition alliance. Since then, Khan has organised several jalsas in different cities of Pakistan, as he aims to win the upcoming general elections again.
These political tensions have naturally caused a frenzy in the country. However, emotions should be kept in check and certainly not targeted towards a political leader’s family, that doesn’t even reside in Pakistan. Is this how we want to be recognised as a nation, especially on an international front?
