The Comedy Drama That Might Hit The Funny Bone … Or Not!

Kala Doriya is about to hit our screens on September 16th. and judging by the hype, the super quick cast changes and ahem, much more ‘behind the scenes activity’, one wondered when the drama would see the light of day! The makers have however, finally announced a release date and judging by the Google Trends Graph, excitement is reaching peak levels as fans search online for more information about the show.
(Good) Comedy Is Always Welcome
Safe to say that success with Ramazan comedy has pushed drama makers to try out the genre sans Ramazan season too, and why not! Audiences have been asking for light-hearted prime time relief, far from the madding KTKs and ahem, BBs, if you know what I mean … if you don’t, you’re not really a drama buff and your opinion doesn’t count? Just kidding, breathe … that was a joke!
But onwards to the comedy scene.
When Saima Akram Chaudhry and Danish Nawaz come together, you’d expect fireworks – remember Chupke Chupke and Hum Tum? Add to that, the likes of Osman Khalid Butt, Nadia Afghan, Sana Javed, Zainab Qayyum, Farhan Ally Agha, Samina Ahmed, Khalid Anam and co. and folks, you’ve got a show right there! Right? … ummm …okay, too soon to say. And I for one, am not counting my chickens before they’re hatched and running around the coop!
For one, it’s too soon. The teasers are a tad too noisy; comedy seems to have acquired a forced loudness and a shallow kind of unintelligent humour, (excuse my first reaction), but I sincerely hope I’m wrong and the teasers are not the mainstay of the drama, in which case, I’m hoping, fervently, that the story might have a chance. Furthermore, there’s something to be said about reverse ageism where younger actors are not being cast to appear in roles where they are more … age appropriate? Change the character or change the role, that’s my advice to those writing and executing the script!
However, let’s not kill the fun till the first few episodes drop. Like I said, benefit of doubt, counting chickens running and all. Saima Akram Chaudhry and Danish Nawaz have pulled together dream projects, the likes of rabbits out of hats if you know what I mean, so audience expectations are sky high!
Osman Khalid Butt took to Instagram
to post about the upcoming project, and he hinted at a social message – so, surprise, surprise, the teasers haven’t revealed everything so far. Osman’s post gives me hope. So looking forward to humour with meaning!
