Karachi witnessed a sudden and intense spell of rain and strong winds, and it quickly turned into something far more serious than just a weather update. What started as a typical pre-Eid shower ended up causing multiple casualties, injuries, and chaos across the city.
So far, reports confirm that at least 16 to 18 people have lost their lives in different rain-related incidents. The majority of these deaths were reported from Baldia Town, where a wall or structure collapsed due to strong winds, trapping people underneath. Other incidents included roofs caving in, trees being uprooted, and even a lightning strike — all pointing to how severe the conditions got within just a few hours.
The winds were no joke either. In some areas, they reached speeds close to 90–97 km/h, which explains the scale of damage. Trees were ripped out, signboards fell, and in several places, weak structures simply couldn’t hold up. Areas like Korangi recorded the highest rainfall, crossing 55mm, while different parts of the city experienced varying intensity — from light drizzle to heavy downpour.
Beyond the immediate damage, the rain once again exposed Karachi’s fragile infrastructure. Roads flooded within hours, traffic came to a standstill, and people found themselves stuck mid-commute, many while out for Eid shopping. Low-lying areas were hit the hardest, with water accumulating quickly and taking time to drain.Power outages followed almost instantly. Several parts of the city went dark as the rain began, and many areas remained without electricity for hours. While teams were reportedly working on restoration, the lack of timely updates only added to the frustration residents were already dealing with.
On the administrative side, authorities moved into action, placing emergency services and municipal teams on high alert. Instructions were given to clear drainage systems, keep pumping stations running, and ensure traffic flow where possible. Rescue teams were also deployed across affected areas to respond to emergencies and assist those impacted.
For now, the weather system is expected to stick around for a bit longer, with chances of more rain and thunderstorms in isolated areas. After what the city has already experienced, there’s an obvious sense of concern around what the next spell might bring.
At its core, this wasn’t just another rainy evening in Karachi. It was a reminder — once again — of how quickly things can escalate, and how unprepared the city still is when they do
