Mirza Ki Heer delivers its opening episodes in storytelling that is crisp, action-packed and dramatic with just the right dose of romance, conflict and big family feels. if the first two episodes are anything to go by, the story is all set for a thriller. Now let’s just hope it continues at the same pace and doesn’t take a nose dive into the darker realms of the drama world where cliches meet sensational and it all comes crashing down ala Humpty Dumpty – and you know the rest…

But let’s not get all gloomy already, because there was nothing gloomy about Mirza Ki Heer so far. Here we give you the story and review all in one breeze, so carry on reading and you’re welcome!
The Story
Heer, played by Hina Afridi meets tragedy at the outset as her father, after taking on huge debts, is unable to repay them and commits suicide. Heer must repay the debt to Dil Nawaz (Zahid Ahmed’s character), who would rather take her on as a bride in exchange for the debt repayment and makes no secret about it. Meanwhile, Heer’s cousin is getting married in another city and she travels by train along with her mother, to attend the wedding in the Mirza family. Surprise, surprise – meet our hero, Taimur Mirza aka Ali Raza who is besotted with our heroine Heer (unbeknownst to her) and can’t wait to welcome her into the shaadi house – his sister Kainat is getting married and so is his young chacha Sohail.
The Storytelling
The storytelling hits totally different because the drama doesn’t unfold according to the timeline above. Rather, the first episode kicks off with Heer’s wedding to Dil Nawaz, and a secret ploy to orchestrate a rescue mission, and free her from her doomed fate by none other than Taimur – a thrilling escape ensues that leaves you sitting on the edge of your seat, hoping the hero saves the day – the same hero you were just introduced to 1 minute ago. But such is the pull of the camera, performances and action, that one is drawn into the drama from the get-go. Hence, Mirza Ki Heer scores points for a winning opening chapter which then retells the backstory, taking in the ensemble cast – from the Mirza khandaan’s patriarch – nana, to his sons, grandchildren and their stories, the double wedding and the very dark villain lurking against the backdrop – none other than Dil Nawaz whose debt – upto or just over Rs. 1 crore, can threaten the ‘happily ever after’ of the entire Mirza clan.
Performances
Hina Afridi and Ali Raza both deliver convincing performances. With Ali Raza throwing us romantic hero vibes and then moving onto action – his forte, and then both the leads subsequently sharing onscreen chemistry that makes it all an engaging watch. Zahid Ahmed for his part, gives us a menacing villain whose clad in tailored suits in one instance and then feasting on platefuls of nihari the next. Add to that, an ensemble cast that ranges from Munazzah Arif, Zainab Qayyum to Ali Tahir and Dania Enwer, and you’ve got yourself a story.
Direction Wins
Mirza Ki Heer gives multiple directional wins as the action in the rescue scene, the fast-paced storytelling, the camera lens zooming out into expansive frames and original angles – e.g. the shaadi ka ghar overhead visuals and bird’s eye views, interestingly shot dream sequences and one-shot scenes, add to the overall original feel of the storytelling, making it both impactful and dramatic as well as breaking the monotony of watching a 30 minute plus episode on the televesion screen.
Although some edits might have come off as a bit abrupt and sudden, but keeping in mind that the creators laid the background for a complex, multi-layered story in the pipeline, with multiple characters, plot lines and three, not two central characters, Mirza Ki Heer seemed to understand the assigment to quite an extent.
Verdict?
We recommend giving this one a go for the first few episodes. Mirza Ki Heer promises an intriguing storyline and if you’re an Ali Raza fan, there’s no reason not to watch, he’s giving you romance, drama and a story that might give adrenalin-pumping action to stay in the game.
