“Our little satellite reached Mars because it was called MOM. If it was called DAD, it would still be circling the Earth, lost, but not willing to ask for directions.”
Twinkle Khanna from Mrs. Funnybones

Do you see yourself juggling work, family, and personal life? Are you also stuck in a desi household with desi problems? Do you find your feet stuck in the mud of insecurities and not-so-funny moments? If yes, then we have a book that connects to how you feel and will make you laugh out loud!
“Each day that you persist in a situation where you are miserable is a day wasted on the path that would lead you to happiness.”
Twinkle Khanna from Mrs. Funnybones
Introduction

The book “Mrs. Funnybones” was published back in 2015 by Penguin Publishers India. But it is as relevant today as it was, 5 years ago. The book is an autobiography in the form of a journal of the author Twinkle Khanna. The book revolves around the lives of the famous Indian actor Akshay Kumar, remarkable interior designer wife Twinkle Khanna, and their families. The theme of the book is based on sarcasm and humor.
Main Characters
“In my opinion, growing older is all about learning and passing it on, otherwise there is no reason for biological evolution to keep us alive after our reproductive years are over.”
Twinkle Khanna from Mrs. Funnybones.
The main lead character is none other than Twinkle Khanna ‘Mrs. Funnybones’ herself in this book. She is a middle-aged desi daughter, working woman, mother of two, a wife of an actor, and daughter in law. Mrs. Funnybones is juggling her responsibilities towards her family, work, and her starstruck personality. The other desi characters are Husband ‘man of the house,’ Son ‘the prodigal son,’ Daughter ‘baby,’ Mother in law ‘Mummyji,’ and Mother ‘Mommy.’
About the Book
The narrative is wrapped in self deprecating humor with layered messages, subtle enough to not seem prudish, yet pointed enough to make you go aaah – is it that simple?
“Love in any relationship, family or an intimate friendship, is only about putting the other person’s needs ahead of your own, and that, my friend, is just as simple and as complex as you make it.”
Twinkle Khanna from Mrs. Funnybones.
From the beginning to the end, the book drops desi problems Mrs. Funnybones faces almost every day. We get to see the not-so-diva but mediocre life of Mrs. Funnybones a.k.a Twinkle. Events from parenting to working, from handling cameras to being a wifey, from being a daughter to being a daughter in law, are filled with laughs and life lessons. Mrs. Funnybones records all her activities with time stamps in her journal. She has the ability to let readers in on everyday conundrums and turn them into a reason to laugh!
On her name:
Excerpt from Mrs. Funnybones
Naming me Twinkle was a foolproof way of making sure that I would get teased throughout my life, have immigration officers at various airports stare at my passport and shake with hysterical laughter and strangers stalk me with WhatsApp messages like, ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, little star, I hope you get hit by a car!
Personal Thoughts

She says what we talk about in our living rooms, (and sometimes in our heads), with obvious simplicity – laugh it out folks, coz some of life’s relationships are inescapable – esp. the dreaded mother – daughter in law
“All you mummyjis beware! If your daughter-in law claims that she loves you like her own mother, then daal mein kuch kaala hai and that little black spot could very well be rat poison.”
Twinkle Khanna from Mrs. Funnybones.
Warning – Get ready to laugh so bad that you might end up peeing in your pants!
Mrs. Funnybones is unlike the literature that I usually read. The book is laid out like a daily journal (kinda like Diary of a Wimpy Kid)? except it’s written by a grown woman! Most working women will relate to the situations and nod their heads in smiling agreement – family life, after all, holds a lot in common and gifts us amusing anecdotes if only, we could see beyond the obvious, as Twinkle obviously does!
The characters, from mother in law, son, daughter, husband resonate with the desi in you. The mood interchanges between comical and sarcastic from the start till the end. One thing I found both unusual and fascinating was that all the chapters began in alphabetical order. I must say, quite an innovative move to attract readers, Twinkle!
Overall, Mrs. Funnybones is an energizing read. Pick it up because you need a respite from heavy dramas, intense (and often stressful news, covid is still here, remember?) or just because, humor is always welcome in every form, be it a wife, daughter, daughter in law or …Twinkle Khanna!
