Heard of Down Syndrome? Today we’re busting some myths and misconceptions surrounding it, so let’s dive in!

About 1 out of every 700 babies born in the world has Down syndrome. What is Down syndrome, you ask? Well, it is a genetic condition caused by a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21. This alters the course of the physical and intellectual development of an individual. A few common physical traits of this condition are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the centre of the palm. However, each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual and may possess these characteristics to different degrees, or not at all.
This condition has a lot of myths and questions surrounding it, so, we’ll be busting some of these myths Let’s get to it!
1. Is It Rare?
MYTH: Down syndrome is a rare disorder.
TRUTH: Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition.
2. Down Syndrome Comes With Sickness?
MYTH: People with Down syndrome are always sick.
TRUTH: Advances in health care and treatment of these conditions have allowed most individuals with Down syndrome to lead healthy lives.
3. Does It Restrict Activity?
MYTH: People with Down syndrome cannot be active members of their community.
TRUTH: People with Down syndrome are active participants in educational, social and recreational activities. They are valued members of their families and communities and make meaningful contributions to society.
4. Do People With Down Syndrome Have Emotions?
MYTH: People with Down syndrome are always happy.
TRUTH: People have feelings just like anyone else. They experience the full range of emotions.
5. It Restricts Cognitive Development
MYTH: Adults with Down syndrome are the same as children with Down syndrome.
TRUTH: Adults are not children and should not be considered children. They enjoy activities and companionship with other adults and have similar needs and feelings as their typical peers.
