Have you read Pir-e-Kamil and have often thought how its depiction on television would be like? Have you at any point of time imagined who would enact Salar Sikander and Imama Hashim in case it is turned into a drama? If so, then you would definitely be disappointed, as Umera Ahmed is clear about one thing – it won’t happen.

The discussion kicked off when a fan on X recommended that it would be such a great idea for Umera Ahmed to reverse her decision and adapt Pir-e-Kamil into a TV drama, even mentioning Ahad Raza Mir as Salar Sikander and Dananeer Mobeen as Imama Hashim.

The fan wrote that they would love to see the two actors in the roles and also mentioned that they had been meaning to watch Umera Ahmed’s ongoing drama Aap Ki Izzat.

It would be so amazing if Umera Ahmed decided to change her mind about not adapting Pir-e-kamil to a drama and cast Ahad Raza Mir as Salar Sikander and Dananeer Mobeen as Imama Hashim. I really like her writing.. imma start watching aap ki izzat soon as well!!

Umera’s response was short, but there really wasn’t much room for interpretation.

“No thank you it will NEVER be dramatizzed.”

And just like that, the Pir-e-Kamil adaptation debate was settled. Again.

Why Is Pir-e-Kamil So Special?

To begin with, those who do not know about the novel Pir-e-Kamil need to be informed that this book written by Umera Ahmed in 2004 ranks among her most popular works. However, to refer to it as just a love story will mean to deprive the novel of its significance in a great deal.

At its heart, the story follows Imama Hashim, a young woman whose journey takes her through a deeply personal struggle with faith, family and the choices she makes for herself. Alongside her is Salar Sikander, an exceptionally intelligent but deeply troubled young man whose life is marked by emptiness, arrogance and an internal struggle that eventually leads him towards a very different understanding of life and faith.

Their stories come together in complicated and often painful ways, but the novel ultimately becomes much more about transformation than romance.

For a lot of people, reading Pir-e-Kamil became a special experience which could not easily fade away because the book touched the issues of faith, purpose of life, moral values and even redemption in some degree. And perhaps that is exactly why the question of adapting it has always been a sensitive one.

It’s Not About The Actors

After her initial response, Umera Ahmed elaborated on her stance by making clear that her objection does not have anything to do with Ahad Raza Mir, Dananeer Mobeen or any actor being considered for the characters. Her reasoning is based on something else which is completely different.

She explained that Pir-e-Kamil is her dedication to the Prophet (P.B.U.H.), and because of that, she wants the novel to remain in that form. She does not want the story to be visually adapted in any format.

Please dont turn it into something which its not. The response was regarding adaptation of PireKamil and not at all any sort of attack on any artist.

This query have been asked multiple times by many readers and fans. Just responding to it one more time 🙂 pic.twitter.com/kqzyryGLUj

That distinction is important because Umera Ahmed has, of course, seen several of her other works make their way to television. Stories such as Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Alif, and others have been adapted for audiences in different forms.

So her decision regarding Pir-e-Kamil isn’t a general rejection of television adaptations of her work. It is specifically about what this particular novel means to her.

Sometimes a story is just different when it stays between the pages. You create the faces, voices, and emotions yourself. You picture your own images of Salar and Imama. You have the story in your hands without some other person dictating what the story will look like for you.

Pir-e-Kamil seems to be one of those stories for Umera Ahmed.

Thus, no matter how many times we may discuss dream casting and envision a Pir-e-Kamil drama, it seems that we will have to keep our conversations where they always were – between the pages of the book.
