As Independence Day was upon us, this week’s episode of Pakistan Idol went all out with its Azaadi special – and honestly, the timing could not have been better. The entire weekend was wrapped in green and white, from celebrations across the country to the Idol stage, which was transformed into its own little ode to Pakistan.

And while patriotic songs can sometimes feel predictable, the contestants managed to give these classics their own identity. From powerful vocals and emotional renditions to performances that had us grooving along, this episode had a little bit of everything. More importantly, it reminded us why some songs never really get old.
With the competition getting closer to its finale, the pressure is clearly on. But before we get there, here are our top five performances from this week’s Pakistan Idol Azaadi Special.
5. Samya Gohar – Watan Ki Mitti
Samya brought a fresh, contemporary feel to Nayyara Noor’s classic, Watan Ki Mitti. Her voice gave the song a softer, more modern touch while still respecting what makes the original so special. Beautiful, effortless and simply lovely to listen to.
4. Rohan Abbas – Aye Watan Pyaray Watan
Rohan may have just reminded everyone exactly why that wildcard entry was worth it. His performance was spot-on, his improvisation worked beautifully and he held those notes like he knew exactly where he wanted to take the performance. This was confident Rohan, and we were here for it.
3. Hira Qaiser – Aye Puttar Hattan Te
This one hit differently. Hira’s rendition was soulful and deeply emotional, bringing a tenderness to the classic that left us genuinely moved. It was the kind of performance that makes you stop thinking about the competition for a moment and simply listen -and isn’t that what music is supposed to do?
2. Waqar Hussain – Mera Inam Pakistan
Taking on an Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song is no small task, but Waqar didn’t try to imitate the legend. Instead, he brought his own rendition to Mera Inam Pakistan, and that made all the difference. You could see the passion behind every note, and for a song that has always been one of our favourite milli naghmas, this one easily earned a spot in our top five.
1. Aryan Naveed – Teray Bina Dil Na Lagay
First of all, Faakhir’s song. Iconic. Second of all, singing Faakhir’s song in front of Faakhir? Aura points. Now put Aryan Naveed in front of it and let him completely lose himself in the music? We were sold.
Aryan was grooving, enjoying every second of the performance and somehow making the song feel fresh all over again. The vocals were on point, the energy was infectious and the whole thing just worked. That standing ovation felt completely deserved.
One More Episode Before The Finale
If this episode was anything to go by, Pakistan Idol is going to have a lot to live up to next week. The Azaadi Special gave us nostalgia, emotion, powerful vocals and performances that felt genuinely Pakistani and now, we’re heading to the grand finale.
Next week is the final, which means the contestants are officially in the home stretch. The stakes are higher, the performances will have to be bigger and, if we’re being honest, we’re not quite ready to say goodbye just yet. But before the winner is crowned, we’re ready to see what these final voices have left in them.
