Pyari Mona started off as a promising narrative championing the cause of men and women who are subjected to fat-shaming. The narrative however seems to be a bit lost in its purpose presently, and we’re hoping the story swerves back on track. Read on for the FUCHSIA Review.

Why can’t we stick to the main issues? Why do our drama creators underestimate the audience, themselves, and the topic of the drama, by adding some ridiculously toxic twists to the story?
Hope for Babar?
Ahh… Just when we thought sitting at the dinner table with Ayaan and Mona might have made Baber appreciate what he was about to leave, the drama takes a deep nose dive by making Mona accidentally send that silly voice note to Baber. It also outlined the hypocrisy of a person who is living with another woman but calling out his wife for having a male friend and regarding the relationship with suspicion. Baber is sinking to new lows.
Baber sahib if you are not interested in Mona, why did that voice note affect you and that also in a manner that you completely dismissed all that Zee has been up to so far. The story undermines Babar’s intelligence, or is he so desperate to prove that his decision to walk out of Mona’s life was the right one that he dreams of a ‘happily ever after’ with the not so committed Zee?
A man who agreed to marry someone he detests for the sake of his daughter – how can now he just leave his daughter alone? Babar’s character needs a journey of its own and we would have loved to be there to witness it, however, for now, it seems he’s going the irredeemable route and we hope to see a more formidable Mona who will get over this too and the damage to her ego that a failed marriage brings with it.
How to Respond to Fat Shaming
Damaging words by Zee to Mona about her appearance were harsh and we could feel the pinch. Much as we understood that people like Zee exist, we really want Mona to be able to stand up for herself eventually and soon, in order to send out a message to many more Mona’s who might be subjected to the same treatment. Losing weight is not always the answer, schooling people like Zee is …
A Low For Mona
Mona’s acceptance that she has started to compromise because of relationships was also another sad reality, which made us appreciate her sacrifice for Ayaan’s sake but also made us angry for not taking a stand for herself and letting Baber continue with whatever he wants. At the end of the day, is Mona also like every other girl, waiting for Baber to return on his own?
Mona was shown to be the embodiment of everything that is courageous, uplifting and undaunting in a young girl. We want to see the focus move away from her weight to show off all the positivity she holds within her character. Sanam Jung has performed the role wonderfully and audiences wait to see Mona rise once again in order to give courage and life lessons to all the Monas who are watching in order to find reprieve from the Shaistas and Babers afflicting them in life.
On a final note, Mona’s father Khalid is a breath of fresh air in her life, but we would like Mona to take charge of her situation and breathe life into a narrative that needs saving from our super heroine – Pyari Mona!
