Rah e Junoon – A love story that we’ve seen before, powered by a cast that holds a sizeable fan base is likely to get the views, but can we hope to watch something different, yet?
A story we’ve seen before… many times!
Perhaps a twist in the tale for Rah e Junoon is what many Pakistani drama fans are desperately seeking, however, others watch because they can just sit back and watch a story without too much emotional or mental exertion. And that, dear folks, is the case for watching Rah e Junoon!
When Shabrez decided to go to the UK with a “one-way ticket”, we were about to praise the shift in the narrative. A part of us hoped for a time-lapse where Meher is married off to Fahad and our hero and heroine, cruelly separated through “samaaj ki deewar” will meet later in life to culminate their love story. But alas! That was not to be. Instead, we were treated to a scene which we have seen countless times where Shabrez’s mother storms into Meher’s house, behaves in an arrogant, high-handed manner, badmouths Meher before her parents, and happily storms out.

Shabrez’s dad playing a game with Shabrez by accepting his son’s desire to marry Meher was …, wait for it … part of his devious plan. And we wonder how Shabrez did not suspect him much. After saying: “How can I trust you?” He left it at that and proceeded to bully Meher into saying “no” to Fahad as his mother will arrive with his Rishta soon. We have seen the angry young man play out so often, the wealthy hero’s family treating a girl from a middle-class background as beneath them, and then the hero taking a stand and threatening to leave everything for her … if we count the number of dramas with the same narrative, we will lose track – infinity is indeed, a number!
Audiences Loving It!
But you know what, the story still clicks! Audiences are watching Rah e Junoon and perhaps, that is what the creators aimed for – a drama that “clicks’ with audiences … and it does!
Some oversights & some saving moments
It was amusing to watch Shabrez’s mom never letting go of her ear pods, even when she was sitting at the dinner table. Moreover, Meher managed to be at college first, then in the gym class where she meets Ayla, and then back at college where Shabrez finds her eventually, all in a matter of moments, or so it seems.
We were happy to note though, that Meher seemed rooted in her decision once she had decided about Fahad and refused to go with Shabrez to discuss matters further. It was also a relief to see Shabrez respect Meher’s decision not to go for a court marriage, but then, soon after, he reverted to the “angry young man” avatar by uttering, “Tum sirf meri ho.”
Performances!
Both Danish Taimoor and Komal Meer are playing up to their characters and it has to be said, their performances match up – intense, emotionally troubled and helpless, which is probably why, despite the hackneyed storyline, audiences are enjoying the watch!
