Here in our Ramzan special feature, we share 5 sunnah inspired food combos you should give a try!

Since the holy month of Ramzan is here and Muslims around the globe practice patience, steadfastness in faith, and adherence to Islamic practices and Sunnah, we should also take this opportunity to discover which of the Prophet’s favorite foods we can combine. Throughout the Quran and Sunnah, there are many Islamic mentions of certain fruits, seeds, and oils.
Today, we uncover them and provide you with four quick options to combine and reap the benefits of two together. Like many of the Sunnah now confirmed by modern scientists, this one about the Prophet’s recommended combinations also has logical and scientific reasoning. Modern scientists say that improper food combinations can cause inadequate digestion, leading to imbalances in pH levels, improper absorption of nutrients, constipation, or other digestive troubles.
So what are they?
1. Dates & Melon
A sunnah directly from Aisha R.A stated the Prophet (P.B.U.H) specially combined melons with dates.
Ummal Mu’minin Aisha RTA narrated, “The Apostle of Allah (SAW) used to eat melon with fresh dates, and he used to say, ‘The heat of the one is broken by the coolness of the other, and the coolness of the one by the heat of the other.’ – Bukhari
2. Talbina – Combining Milk, Barley Flour, Honey & Dry Fruits
It is stated through various hadiths that The Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) recommended talbina for the sick and grieving. He said, “ At-talbina gives rest to the heart of the patient and makes it active and relieves some of his sorrow and grief” (Bukhari 7:71#593).
Aisha (RA) said:” When a member of the family of the Prophet (PBUH) would fall sick, He would order that barley soup would be made and the ill person would command to have some of it as it strengthens the heart of the sick person” [Ibn Majah].
Talbina is basically a porridge containing milk, barley flour, honey and dry fruits, it helps clear toxins from the stomach. The fibre content helps to ease digestions and gastrointestinal issues.
3. Vinegar & Bread
Ever heard of this before? Neither had we! But we’re definitely giving it a try.
As reported by Jabir: “I entered the house of the Prophet with him and there was some bread and vinegar. The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Eat; what a good condiment is vinegar.’” (Sunan an- Nasa’i 3796)
4. Fig & Honey
Our Holy prophet {pbuh) has taught us the great benefits of honey. Scientists have also confirmed the beneficial effects of honey regarding medical and health issues. Honey is considered the ultimate food for internal and external benefits. Honey is healthy, natural, digestible and a great source of energy. It contains carbohydrates, vitamins, enzymes, proteins and lipids. It also contains a small amount of glucose, fructose, copper, and zinc. The Prophet in many instances recomemded honey for various ailments.
The Fig is another of the few fruits mentioned in the Holy Quran, an entire surah is named after them, At-Tin. Figs are also mentioned in Ibn-al Qayyim’s ” The Prophetic Medicine”. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) mentioned: ” Eat figs, if I would say a certain type of fruit was sent down to us from the heavens I would say it’s a fig because it has no seed. It ends the piles and is useful for rheumatism”.
So many reports and recipes from Sunnah and Hadith include dry fruits and honey, like above in Talbina – so why not combine the two, we bet it would taste absolutely scrumptious.
5. Water & Dates
It’s famously known how the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) would break his fast with dates and if he didn’t have dates, he would break the fast with water. So you know this is the most commonly known food combo, perfect and the most ideal for breaking your fast.
Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) would break his fast with dates explaining:” When one of you breaks his fast, let him break with dates as they are blessed”. {Sunan-al-Tirmidhi 695}. Dates are an excellent natural sweetener. This sweet fruit is packed with plenty of nutrients. Dates contain proteins, minerals, and vitamins, high in fibre and potassium.
Salman ibn ‘Amir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates for they are blessed. If they are not found, let him break it with water for it is pure.”
