Islamabad might have cafés on every corner, but finding one that actually delivers on taste? That’s the real challenge.

Let’s be real – Islamabad is going through a restaurant boom. There’s a new eatery popping up every other week, and every markaz is now home to at least a dozen cafes with aesthetic interiors, pastel plates, and menus that scream “Instagram me!” But it made me wonder… are any of them actually worth it?
We’ve all seen the cycle: a shiny new restaurant opens, every food blogger rushes in, stories and reels flood our feeds, and suddenly the place is the spot. But as someone who’s a bit of a picky eater (read: comfort zone loyalist), I’ve had my fair share of overhyped meals. Plus, let’s face it – Islamabad’s food scene is still 50/50. It’s no Karachi or Lahore. Even when a crowd-favourite like Xanders sets up shop here, the reviews are mixed at best.
That said, it’s not all bad. Some places really do get it right – whether it’s for casual lunches with friends or family dinners that need to impress. Here are a few spots that, in my opinion, actually live up to the hype (or at least don’t disappoint).
District 6
Located in Super Market, District 6 has that classic bistro vibe. The ambiance is solid, perfect for a chill dinner or a catch-up lunch. The menu is a bit all-over-the-place (you’ll spend a minute flipping through it), but the food is consistently good. You’ll find something for everyone here – always a safe bet.
Café Flow
Small place, small menu — but sometimes less is more. I tried the pesto sandwich and was pleasantly surprised. Their iced coffee was also a win. It does get crowded (read: minimal seating), but it’s cozy, and the vibe works. Great for a quick bite and caffeine fix.
Sage
Sage is always packed, and while that can be annoying, it’s also a good sign. I’ve been there 3 to4 times and honestly? Respect where it’s due — they’re consistent. The food delivers. The dessert game could use a little help, but if you’re going for mains, you’re in good hands.
Dahlia
Probably the prettiest interior on this list. Dahlia has that rustic, plant-nursery-meets-restaurant thing going on and it works. Their whipped ricotta? So good. If you’re overwhelmed by the menu, just start there — you won’t regret it. It’s a great pick for brunches or quieter meals.
Robert’s Coffee
I like Robert’s for one reason: it delivers what it promises. Good coffee, generous portions, and solid quality. Their parmesan burger is a personal favorite — no frills, just flavour. It’s one of those places you keep going back to without even thinking.
Islamabad’s food scene might not be the culinary capital of the country just yet, but if you sift through the fluff and the filters, there are some real gems to be found. The key is to manage expectations, avoid the FOMO trap, and find your personal go-to spots. These are mine — for now. Let’s see what opens next week.
