Millennial Slangs We Must Know Before Bidding Farewell To 2022
Millennial Slangs We Must Know Before Bidding Farewell To 2022

The World is about to bid farewell to 2022 and before it ends you must catch up with the slangs and phrases that are a part of millennial everyday life! I mean, how else will you engage with them, get with the drift, and root for the GOAT? Yeah! I know you’d get it! Though, the combination of two generations Gen Z and Millennials, which also goes by a slang ‘Zillennial’ (Bet you didn’t know that); find different ways to express themselves, they come up with unique phrases and jargon. Most of the time, the ahem, older (I’d like to say wiser), generation finds it hard to decipher which makes them ‘uncool’ and ‘old fashioned’ and who doesn’t want to be considered cool, trendy and fashionable?

Just like fashion, news, style and cell phones, internet has its own vocabulary and if you want to fall right in, rather than stick out like a sore thumb, these lingos and slangs have their own fashion trends. You must have heard about the origin of words and their particular use and meaning, sometimes a word is used in the context that does not reflect its meaning. So bear that in mind, as I give you, a list of phrases that will add miles to your Zillennial vocabulary before bidding farewell to 2022.

What are Slangs and Lingos?

Slang words are the combination of informal phrases and words that are used verbally and do not represent the actual meaning. Lingo is somewhat the same as a slang; it is considered to be a jargon of a particular group of people. Brace yourself, here it comes!

1. Messi trending as the GOAT

Lionel Messi has been trending for all the right reasons as the GOAT on twitter and indeed he is the “Greatest of All Time”. GOAT is used as a short form of greatest of all time. Gen Z and its craze for shortcuts will surely end up into a new language someday. Some other GOATS of our era – our very own Babar Azam is right there on top for Cricket fans.

2. Have you ever heard a song that Slaps?

There is nothing violent about any song that slaps rather than how hard is its impact on our mind and soul. Although, we all know what slap actually means but as a slang ‘slap’ means to be excellent and amazing. Now can you recall, if you have ever been slapped by a song lately?

3. “I think you’ve got the drip”

No, you’re not leaking when you’re compliment as a drip, instead you’ve got what it takes to be called stylish, extremely fashionable and hot. Thanks to American rapper Cardi B‘s hit song “Drip” released in 2018. This phrase has replaced ‘cool ‘, ‘hot’, and ‘saucy’ on Instagram and Twitter. Hmmm, I assume the word has now acquired new meaning for you as you consider the ‘dripping’ people in your life.

4. Stop flexing your smart watch!

This one is a favourite and super popular amongst the Gen Z’s. Flexing refers to showing off and exaggerating accomplishments. As a slang, flex is used as an expression of arrogance and insincerity. Usually when someone is flexing, they are showing off something arrogantly. That’s a fun one to share as there’s always someone flexing in your friend’s group – go for it, and watch the word fire up in no time!

5. Nomophobia! A Slang or a Disorder?

Fear of being without your mobile phone. If ‘Nomophobia’ makes it to the list of psychiatric disorders, we wonder how the world would function. And if you don’t have it, safe to say, you’re probably alone! Or, one the few self actualized people left on this planet who keep calm, and carry on with or without their gadgets! More power to you!

6. “I am a Beyonce stan”

Stan is an over enthusiastic and obsessive fan of a celebrity. It’s a combination of Stalker and Fan. Vast and viral reach of the web and social media is making it hard for celebrities in keeping the ‘stans’ away from their personal life.

7. Would you like to hob-nob with a Boujee?

Boujee is someone who is high-class and owns expensive stuff. This term got fame after an American Hip-hop group Migos released the song “bad and boujee”

8. What’s Low key? Vegetable or a phrase?

Low key means secret or quiet . Someone is low key jealous of your dressing style when they don’t admit it openly in front of you. Aha! Now you know why you’re not getting those compliments! You’re not the problem, it’s THEM – lowkey them!

 9. Are you acting up because you’re hangry?

Hangry is another term trending on twitter and Instagram. Hangry is a combo of hungry and angry that describes both the feelings in a single word. It’s been used as an adjective to describe the mood of a person.

17. NPC – Non Player Character

A person who fades in to the background, like a person who is present in our lives but he or she is considered irrelevant, foolish and ignorant . A non player character is very much there in the picture but has no will of his/her own.

18. On the Bridge

This is the most popular phrase on the internet. When someone says “they are on the bridge”, it means they have joined the meeting or call and waiting for the other person or party to join from the other end. Usually used in virtual meetings. And by all means ‘on the bridge’ doesn’t mean that somebody is actually standing on the bridge.

19. Sipping the Tea

Gone were the days when people used to ‘spill the tea’, it’s 2022 and people are ‘sipping the tea’ and enjoying their cup ‘a tea. Sipping the tea as opposed to spilling the tea, means listening to gossips as rather than spreading it.

20. Rent free

If someone or something is in our thoughts all the time and you couldn’t get them out of your head, then they are living in your mind rent free.
