This film based on the 60’s iconic comics seems to be a blend of comedy, romance, and drama but will The Archies deliver the same Zoya Akhtar magic? Should we give it a chance? Here is more on the trailer & the cast!

The trailer of the much talked about Zoya Akhtar and star kids packed Netflix movie just released recently, and Riverdale has found a vibrant Indian version in The Archies. In what appears to be a more light-hearted, fun, and breezy adaptation of the comics, as opposed to the Hollywood version “Riverdale” the 17-year-old characters from the iconic ’60s comic navigate through their friendships, relationships, aspirations, and the desire to make the world a better place amidst music, fun, and dance.
United by a common cause to save a cherished park, they leave audiences with a powerful message – one is never too young to change the world. Against the backdrop of 1960s India, Archie and the gang grapple with matters of romance, friendship, and the future of Riverdale, all while facing the looming threat of developers set on demolishing a beloved park.
“The Archies, a forthcoming Indian Hindi teen musical comedy film, is an adaptation of the American comic book series of the same name. Produced by Tiger Baby Productions and directed by Zoya Akhtar, the film features a cast including Agastya Nanda, Khushi Kapoor, Suhana Khan, Vedang Raina, Mihir Ahuja, Aditi Saigal, and Yuvraj Menda. The anticipated release date on Netflix is set for December 7, 2023.
Will The Archies Match The Same Undeniable Directorial Prowess Zoya Akhtar Is Known For?
Zoya Akhtar’s directorial prowess is undeniable, with a track record that includes acclaimed films such as “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” “Dil Dhadakne Do,” “Luck By Chance,” and the critically acclaimed “Gully Boy.” These films have solidified her reputation as a director capable of delivering compelling narratives across diverse genres.
Bringing Alive The Debate Of Nepotism
But the casting has been drawing heavy flak. The casting choices, particularly involving star kids like Suhana Khan, Agastya Nanda and Khushi Kapoor have sparked debates. As the debate over nepotism is acknowledged, there also seems to be the prevailing sentiment, that performance ultimately outweighs lineage, citing examples of successful star kids like Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Varun Dhawan. Even though they maybe nepo kids it eventually boils down to whether they can act or not!
Reverse Ageism?
Even though we wait for the cast to reveal their talents onscreen, the casting raising questions on reverse ageism. Casting 20+ year olds for a story that is centered around 17-year-old high school kids is a dilemma the entertainment industry needs to wrap its head around in an era where the debate for casting choices is drawing audience attention who is demanding makers stick to the narrative in color, ethnicity, gender and yes, age.
Divided Audiences Await The Full Movie
While opinions on the film’s ability to mirror the spirit of Archie’s comics are divided, for some, the movie is able to offer a nostalgic journey into their tumultous & hugely precious teenage years. On the flip side, critics argue that the film lacks the true essence of the iconic comics and might be a mood-dampener for the die-hard Archie enthusiasts.
The film’s art direction has been hailed for successfully capturing the retro vibe of the 1960s. It transports audiences to an era characterized by distinctive aesthetics and cultural nuances, enhancing the overall cinematic experience. Leaving some expressing that they were pleasantly surprised with the film’s production value, sets, and overall quality, it sure does look good in terms of the onscreen aesthetics, design, costumes with some impeccable fashion choices, cinematography, music and locations.
But the final questions remain: The true Archie comics were a real blast but will Zoya Akhtar be able to work the same magic with the movie? Should we wait to judge the full picture after watching the actual movie? Is it more of a rip off the show Riverdale? Will the cast be able to do justice to the iconic comics? Should they just have a run of the mill Bollywood debut? Why take chances with a classic?
