The teaser for the highly-anticipated film ‘Khel Khel Mein’ is finally out! Right off the bat, it looks very promising and has definitely captured our attention. The production quality, direction, and cinematography look top-notch. We are very excited to see how this one plays out!

The excitement levels (and expectations) are slightly higher for this one because it is the first Pakistani film being released after the reopening of cinemas and also because it is a brainchild of the talented director/producer duo, Nabeel Qureshi and Fiza Ali Meerza. It also stars the insanely talented Sajal Aly and Bilal Abbas. How do we contain our excitement?

Nabeel and Fiza a.k.a The ‘FilmWala Productions‘ have previously given us brilliant films like ‘Load Wedding’ and ‘Actor in Law’. They have undoubtedly always chosen social issues and thought-provoking topics for their films. Hence, keeping up with the tradition, ‘Khel Khel Mein’ is based on the separation of East Pakistan from West Pakistan in 1971.

The Story

The official Twitter handle of ‘Khel Khel Mein’ describes the story as “A heartwarming drama depicting a youthful take on tragic historical events. Lies may make enemies out of brothers. The wise know the truth can heal all wounds.”

If we go by our first impressions, the teaser packs in quite a punch. Set against a war-like setting, the teaser depicts young people from the present generation speaking up and questioning things history as they know it, perspectives that were perhaps never brought to anybody’s attention or were brushed under the rug all these years. We are guessing the film seeks to shed light on the parts of our history that may have been glossed over, or on the parts that were concealed with a narrative we were lured into, and to make these parts relevant for today’s youth.

The word Dhaka jumps out like a stark reminder from 50 years ago – hinting at a painful, yet necessary resurrection of the past?

The narrative doesn’t mince words

50 Years Of Mistrust, Memories & Myths

Judging by the teaser, it does not look like your typical ‘boy meets girl’ story, which in itself, will be quite refreshing for audiences. Moreover, by the looks of it, the story aims to educate our youth about history.

Does the film aim to relive a part of our history (related to 1971) and make it stick this time, especially in the minds of our youth? This mirrors the film’s tagline which reads “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.”

However, this is pure assumption from what we deduce from the trailer so far. The film releases on 19th November and expectations are touching the sky!

Sajal & Bilal Back On Screen Together!

Sajal and Bilal fans are excited beyond words to see them back together on-screen after ‘O Rangreza.’ Individually, both of them are brilliant performers but together, their chemistry on-screen is just a treat to watch.

Besides the talented duo, the star-studded cast includes Sheheryar Munawar, Javed Sheikh, Manzar Sehbai, Samina Ahmed, and Marina Khan. Talent overload? Most definitely!

It is hard not to set our expectations high for a film with such a brilliant cast lineup!

Is The Topic Too Risky?

Sajal Ay,

‘Sawal karna kyun nahi aata hamain? Kyun aik jhootay ilzaam ka boujh apne seenay pe uthaye phir rahay hain? Kyun nahi poochtay ke aakhir hua kya tha? Ya ham bhi ussi chaal ka hissa ban gaye jo dushman ne chali thi?”

We heard these powerful yet thought-provoking lines towards the end of the teaser, delivered by the one and only, Sajal. Though It makes us wonder, if picking such a divisive topic was a tad too risky? And, will the film makers be able to do justice to it? If anyone can, the combined duo of Fizza Ali Meerza and Nabeel Qureshi have it in them to turn a few heads and rethink history – quite the challenge but greatness in film making comes from courage in taking on topics & conversations that we prefer not to linger upon.

It will be interesting to see how this film answers all our questions. Nonetheless, the excitement of finally revisiting cinemas to watch a Pakistani film after what seems like ages is an experience not to be taken lightly!
