Why is it still that women remain unaware of the rights the Islamic Contract of Marriage provides them, find out what Vaneeza Ahmed says!

Challenging Stereotypes
Vaneeza Ahmed is currently starring in the much applauded drama “Kuch Ankahi” Her character is fun, warm but one who stands up for themselves and others. A challenge to the stereo typical image of a phupo.
Dramas Addressing Social Issues
We saw a very important scene in the drama which revolved around a shaadi scene where Vaneeza’s character urges the religious cleric to not cut out the right to divorce clause in the Nikkahnama. We absolutely loved the scene, the message and the delivery.
Advocating For Nikkah Rights
Vaneeza has not just stopped there, she has taken and advocated the cause of the girl’s rights as per the Nikkahnama one step further in her BBC Urdu interview. She spoke about how the drama is getting a great response and this was one character her heart was set on and she was excited to do despite her initial reluctance towards coming on screen after a long time. When asked if she related to her character, she says the character is quite relatable to her own personality but it did challenge her to go a step further.
Call A Spade A Spade
Not all dramas have to be the ones garnering more views, with more action and drama, we need some that hit home and are scratching beyond the surface. While, sometimes they are and can be both.
Vaneeza believes dramas have the power to hopefully impact the society and we need that because our women are pressured from all facets in life and in doing so are prevented from knowing their rights. They are taught we don’t even deserve to have rights just by the virtue of being a woman. We need to call a spade a spade and practices like asking for dowry, not addressing the Nikkahnama infront of the girl and the cancellations of clauses that protect the girl such as the right to divorce is wrong and needs to be addressed.
Her Personal Account
Fun fact: She shares how she was petrified when she found out later that her Haq Mehr was only Rs. 24!
When she found out, she fought with her mother but now thinks in retrospect, being such a strong woman she could not even say something at the time so let alone a woman who might not be as strong. Vaneeza urges women to speak up for themselves and not be afraid.
The Contract’s Paramount Significance
Why is it that being a headstrong woman has a negative connotation but a man who being headstrong is ambitious?
If only we would realize the paramount significance and weight the Nikkahnama or the Islamic Marriage Contract holds, we dismiss it as a mere legality, a paper to keep – but really it’s a piece of paper that sets the trajectory for a woman’s married life. It’s her right, her shelter, her safety and her guarantee to save herself when needed.
Girls, we really hope you take a thorough look at this breakdown of the Nikkahnama below!
