In a major escalation of its war with Hezbollah, Israel has killed the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, marking its most significant strike against the Lebanese militant organization after months of intense fighting. The Israeli military confirmed that it conducted a precise airstrike on Friday targeting Hezbollah’s leadership meeting at its headquarters in Dahiyeh, a southern suburb of Beirut.

Hassan Nasrallah is often referred to as the “father of psychological warfare” due to his strategic use of media and communication to influence public perception and morale during conflicts. His adeptness in psychological operations has allowed Hezbollah to project strength and resilience, often leveraging the media to convey messages that resonate with both supporters and adversaries.Nasrallah, one of the most formidable figures in the region, was the highest-ranking target killed by Israel since the clashes began, dealing a severe blow to Hezbollah’s command structure and operational capabilities. Read more about him.

Early Life

Nasrallah was born in 1960 into a poor Shia family in Sharshabouk, a marginalized neighborhood in Beirut’s Karantina area. Sayyed Musa Sadr, an Iranian-born cleric with Lebanese roots, heavily influenced his early interest in religion. In the spring of 1974, Sadr launched the Movement of the Deprived, later known as Amal, to advocate for Lebanon’s underserved Shia community and address the dire conditions in the country’s east and south. Seeking further religious education, Nasrallah went to Najaf, Iraq, to study at a seminary.

Lebanon’s civil war erupted in April 1975, and just a few months later, in July, Sayyed Musa Sadr formed the Lebanese Resistance Brigades—Amal’s armed faction—to protect southern Lebanon from Israeli attacks. During this period, Nasrallah joined Amal. As the conflict worsened, his family relocated from the predominantly Christian area of east Beirut to their ancestral village of Bazourieh in Tyre. In December 1976, Nasrallah traveled to Najaf, Iraq, to pursue religious studies at a seminary known for promoting a more politically active role for Shia scholars. There, he connected with Lebanese scholar Sayyed Abbas Musawi, who was a student of Sayyed Mohammad Baqer Sadr, a prominent cleric and cousin of Musa Sadr.

By early 1978, the Baathist regime in Iraq had begun cracking down on Shia activists, forcing both Nasrallah and Musawi to return to Lebanon. Musawi then established a religious seminary in Baalbeck, where Nasrallah continued his education. The following year, Nasrallah and Musawi—who had become an official within Amal—threw their support behind Iranian cleric Ruhollah Khomeini, whose followers had successfully established the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Hezbollah & The Rise Of Hassan Nasrallah

Hezbollah was formed in the summer of 1982 by members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard who arrived in Lebanon to fight the Israeli invasion. Nasrallah, who had already established himself as a key figure within the group, quickly built a power base as Hezbollah joined other Iranian-backed factions, forming what is known as the Axis of Resistance.

When Hezbollah’s leader, Sayyed Abbas Musawi, was killed in an Israeli raid in February 1992, Nasrallah was chosen to take over as secretary-general. Under his leadership, Hezbollah waged a campaign that eventually led to the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon in 2000, after an 18-year occupation. During this time, Nasrallah’s eldest son, Hadi, was killed in 1997 while fighting against Israeli troops.

Following Israel’s withdrawal, Nasrallah became an iconic figure in Lebanon and throughout the Arab world. His status was further solidified after Hezbollah managed to fight Israel to a stalemate in the 2006 war, a conflict that lasted 34 days.

In 2004, Nasrallah played a crucial role in a prisoner exchange deal with Israel, showcasing his ability to negotiate. By 2018, Hezbollah and its allies had expanded their influence, becoming major players in the formation of a unity government in Lebanon. Nasrallah’s popularity grew significantly, but he began to limit his public appearances due to the threat of assassination by Israel. Most of his speeches were subsequently broadcast live via video from a secret location, ensuring his safety while maintaining his influence.

His Role During The Gaza War

Nasrallah’s rhetoric during this period was defiant and unyielding. He emphasized that Hezbollah would not cease its attacks until a ceasefire was achieved in Gaza, positioning himself as a protector of Palestinian interests and a key player in the Axis of Resistance—a coalition of anti-Israel groups that includes Hamas and other regional actors. This strategy effectively served to stretch Israeli military resources, compelling the country to divert forces to its northern border to address Hezbollah’s growing presence and firepower.

Nasrallah’s speeches and the operational activities of Hezbollah during this period are emblematic of his leadership style, which combines fiery oratory with calculated military maneuvers. His role in the ongoing war had reinforced his standing as a central figure capable of challenging Israeli power and extending support to the Palestinian cause, even from a distance.

The martyrdom of Hassan Nasrallah is an immeasurable loss for the Palestinian cause and the entire Muslim world. As a steadfast advocate of resistance and unity, his leadership transcended borders, serving as a beacon of hope and defiance against occupation and oppression. Throughout his life, Nasrallah’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people, both in word and action, solidified his legacy as a symbol of courage and resilience. His voice has inspired millions and his strategic acumen has strengthened the regional front against aggressors, making his absence deeply felt not just in Lebanon but across every community that seeks justice and dignity for Palestine.

In the wake of such a monumental loss, the Muslim world must find solace in the knowledge that Nasrallah’s vision and mission will continue to guide future generations. His sacrifice is a reminder that true resistance does not end with the life of a single leader but lives on in the hearts of those he empowered and inspired. May his martyrdom be a source of strength and unity, galvanizing the global Muslim community to continue the struggle for the rights and freedom of the Palestinian people, in the spirit of solidarity that he championed so passionately.
