From questioning whether a girl should live with her in-laws to exploring changing dynamics and much more, Jama Taqseem has consistently had us talking about one issue or another.
Today, Mawra Hocane has joined us to talk a bit about it and more!
This article is an excerpt from the YouTube interview.
How Did Jama Taqseem Happen?
Mawra Hocane shared that her journey with Jama Taqseem began the moment she received the script. She recalled starting it late at night, thinking she would read only a portion before sleeping, but the story gripped her so deeply that she ended up finishing it by early morning. By 5 a.m., she had already messaged the team, expressing how much she liked the script while also requesting a meeting to discuss a few concerns – not to change the story, but to better understand the writer’s and director’s perspectives, particularly around the character of Laila.
During her meeting with the director, Ali Hassan, her concerns were addressed in depth. He explained that Jama Taqseem is a story of a normal girl living a normal life – where no single, life-altering event occurs, but instead, many small moments shape her journey. Rather than one big turning point, Laila’s life was built around numerous everyday experiences, each carrying its own emotional weight. What he needed, he told her, was honesty in performance – an ability to deeply feel and truthfully portray those small, often overlooked moments.
This perspective helped Mawra connect with the character. She began mapping Laila’s emotional journey through these minor yet meaningful instances, which allowed her to understand and inhabit the role more fully. She shared that this clarity became the foundation of her performance and ultimately convinced her to say yes to the project.
Vision, Intention, and Gratitude: Mawra Hocane On Life And Faith
Mawra Hocane reflected on the importance of having a vision, explaining that everyone has a vision for themselves, but it evolves over time. She noted that her vision at 22 was very different from what it is today, and emphasized that while vision matters, the intention behind it is even more important. She believes that when the heart is in the right place, people can feel the sincerity, even if actions aren’t perfect.
For her, vision isn’t just about being an actor – it’s about being a human who contributes positively to society, even in small ways. She sees her efforts as small droplets that, when combined with others, can create a meaningful impact. Making a difference, especially in the lives of young girls, is a measure of fulfillment for her. She wants to use her influence responsibly and meaningfully while she can, aware of life’s temporary nature.
How Has Marriage Changed Mawra Hocane?
Mawra Hocane shared that marriage has brought a noticeable change in her personality – she laughs out loud now, something she never used to do before. Surrounded by Ameer’s humor and the happiness in his family, she finds herself laughing freely and often, something she realized a few months into their married life.
When asked about romantic gestures, Mawra recalled trying her hand at cooking for Ameer’s birthday. Despite not being an experienced cook, she made burgers, pasta, and even biryani (with a lot of help from family). She found joy in the effort, even if mistakes were made, and felt it was meaningful to do something for him and the family. She emphasized that her intention mattered more than perfection, and she would happily cook for him again if asked.
Mawra also shared that she expresses her love through small written notes, leaving them in places where Amit would find them during her trips. Overall, she painted a picture of marriage filled with small joys, heartfelt gestures, and shared laughter, highlighting how love often lives in the little, everyday moments.
