How do you like your chocolate – dark, white, nutty or absolutely insane? Read on to know what the Wonka prequel trailer with Timothee Chalamet gives us a sneak peek into!

What did we say about 2023 being the year of 90’s babies? It just keeps getting better and better! Is it a mere coincidence that 2023 has taken us on a nostalgic rollercoaster ride back to our childhood, where both 90’s kids and millennials find themselves in a simulation? We’ve witnessed the return of childhood staples Barbie, the Fast and Furious franchise, and the Mission Impossible series. And now, to add to the mix, a Prequel to THE Willy Wonka movie!
The times we have repeatedly watched Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is a tad bit embarrassing to admit. Willy Wonka in this prequel is taking us back to Willy’s origins and how the world’s greatest chocolate factory came into being. The eccentric man of great ingenuity and the worlds best chocolate maker was one of our most magical childhood fictional characters.
The movie, Wonka is slated for release in December, 2023.
Inspired By & Based On Roald Dahl’s Classics
The character, Willy Wonka is based on the stories by the greatest children’s book author Roald Dahl and Wonka is set to make you feel all warm and cozy this Christmas! This might be the wholesome we have been missing out on. It is said that Wonka is purely based on imagination and a fresh approach but keeps intact, the integrity of the book’s characters and themes.
Cast & Crew Of Wonka
From the director of Paddington Paul King, the prequel stars Timothee Chalamet (of course), Hugh Grant, Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Sally Hawkins, Calah Lane, Colin O’Brien, Matt Lucas, Simon Farnaby, Natasha Rothwell, Rufus Jones and we saved the best for the last, Mr. Bean AKA Rowan Atkinson (spot him in the trailer)! Audiences claim no matter the role, its always a joy seeing Rowan Atkinson in films. Many have decided how they will just watch it for Rowan Atkinson complete with antics which in itself is enough to add it to their unmissable watchlist. Even Hugh Grant is on a roll and his fans are overjoyed, solely watching it for his quintessential British humor as Oompa Loompa – unmissable!
Timothee Chalamet As Willy Wonka – Will He Be The Right Choice?
Viewers of the trailer are praising Timothee Chalamet as a talented actor specifically for his role in Dune but some (including us) are wary given most of his characters to date have been quiet and predominantly reserved. The trailer pays testament to the same and we don’t quite feel the Willy Wonka kookiness or the slight dark edge in Timothee Chalamet. It’s unlikely one can match Johnny Depp’s nuttiness as Mr. Wonka but will Chalamet be able to even remotely match Johnny Depp’s edge? Was he the right choice for it? He seems not as whimsical and nutty as we would have liked, let’s just say he’s left a bland Willy Wonka impression. He seems to be missing the madness and the unhinged goofy behaviour. We hope that’s not the case…
Or perhaps he will throw new shades on the character that might just grow on us – a challenge indeed!
Peek At The Plot
In the whimsical trailer, Willy Wonka has spent the past 7 years travelling the world perfecting his craft. As a magician, an inventor and a chocolate maker he faces a crisis – The mighty chocolate cartel is crushing all the chocolate makers and forbids them from making chocolate or opening up shop. What will Willy do? Chances are he will create a chocolate that makes them fly.
The Trailer Makes Our Hearts Go Fuzzy
The trailer fuzzily warmed our hearts just the way a delicious hot cocoa would do on a cold winter night, teleporting us to the world of nuttiness and chocolate of Willy Wonka and his adventures, just like the earlier movies had done in our childhood. The characters seem all fun, whimsical, goofy and each shall add a ton of magic and joy to the movie. If that was the intent of the creators, to capitalize on the previous Wonka feels, they hit their mark.
The trailer also gives us a preview of a few, beautifully crafted motivational reminders for both adults and children alike! It’s a mix of overwhelming nostalgia and a touch of delight as we shall soon witness a revival of the most endearing classics!
If you are a fan of two things: chocolate and happiness, you will be elated to watch Wonka in cinemas in December. Go on and melt into the world of chocolate and happiness in Wonka’s trailer!
