Storyline Of Zindagi Tamsha
The story revolves around the life of an elderly Naatkhuwan (reciter of hymns in praise of Prophet Muhammad PBUH) named Rahat Khawaja, portrayed by veteran actor Arif Hasan. Besides being a religious person known for his righteousness, Rahat is also adored for taking care of his bedridden wife. He becomes embroiled in a scandal after a private dance video of him is leaked, leading to public scrutiny and condemnation. Thus, he is cornered & questioned about his character by his own family and friends. The film delves into the complexities of human emotions, struggles with self-identity, and the consequences of a judgmental society.
The Journey Of Zindagi Tamasha
Zindagi Tamasha (Circus of Life) has received numerous international accolades. It made its debut at the Busan International Film Festival in 2019, where it earned the esteemed Kim Ji-Seok Award, becoming the first Pakistani film to achieve this honor at the festival. Additionally, the film represented Pakistan in the International Feature Film Award category at the 93rd Academy Awards in 2020. Furthermore, it secured the prestigious Snow Leopard Award for Best Film at the 6th Asian World Film Festival (AWFF) in 2021.
However, it also faced severe backlash from religious extremists and conservative groups in Pakistan who believed the film portrayed Islam in a negative light. The film created significant controversy even before its release due to its sensitive subject matter and social commentary. Moreover, it explores themes of religion, societal hypocrisy, and the impact of social media in a conservative Pakistani society.
Due to threats, its release in Pakistan has been repeatedly postponed from 2020 to 2022. As the film touches upon sensitive religious and societal issues, it sparked a nationwide debate on freedom of expression and artistic liberties in Pakistan.
Sarmad Sultan Khoosat Announces To Release Zindagi Tamasha On YouTube
Despite the challenges, the film is getting a worldwide release on YouTube today on 4th August 2023 was announced by the director & co-producer Sarmad Sultan Khoosat on his Instagram recently.
There is a sense of loss, and it’s not just mine. It shouldn’t be just mine. There is a sense of failure but it’s not just my failure. It’s a failure of the system, of our independent voices not being strong enough. As a conscientious and honorable citizen, I made every effort within my capabilities concerning administration and legal matters. I invested my resources and adhered to the prescribed procedures, yet, unfortunately, Zindagi Tamasha (Circus of Life) still endured an unjust outcome.

Sarmad emphasized that Zindagi Tamasha was a labor of love, brought to life without relying on external funding or corporate support. He stressed the significance of a genuine cinematic experience, crafted with immense sensitivity and dedication. Despite pouring his heart into the project, the film encountered unjust treatment and discrimination.
